Two teams advance after the opening round of the America East Conference Men’s Tennis Championships on Friday afternoon at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. Both No.1 seeded Stony Brook and No. 2 seeded Binghamton had a bye in this first round of play.

In the men’s championship, No. 4 Boston U. defeated No. 5 New Hampshire 5-1, while No. 3 UMBC defeated No. 6 Hartford 4-0. The Terriers scored all five of their points in singles matches with wins from Jared Jackson, Miron Nissim, Ross Lohr, Giulio Gallarotti and Tim Sichler. UMBC was carried by singles victories by Irfan Shamasdin, Fernando Ferreira and Mehrban Iranshad.
The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
