Boston University’s Miron Nissim (Milano, Italy) has been named the America East Men’s Tennis Player of the week. On the women’s side, Binghamton University’s Juliana Umeki (Mogidas Cruises, Brazil) and Stony Brook University’s Anne Cathrine Valle (Oslo, Norway/Norwegian College for Top Athletes) share the honor. The accolades were announced Tuesday (march 21).
Nissim went a perfect 4-0 on the week, helping the Terriers earn victories over Hartford and Monmouth. The freshman, who had played in the bottom half of the singles lineup all season, got moved to the third spot and did not disappoint, posting a 6-0, 6-0 victory over Hartford’s Charles Reich and followed with a 6-1, 6-1 triumph over Monmouth’s Tim McLane. Nissim also teamed up with sophomore Phil DeMeo at third doubles for a pair of wins.
Umeki transferred to Binghamton in January and has ascended to the No. 1 singles spot. She has gone 12-1 since arriving on campus and is a perfect 9-0 in dual matches. Against nationally-ranked Coastal Carolina on March 15, she defeated Petra Jantti 6-2, 7-5 at No. 2 singles. The following day, against a UNC-Wilmington squad that entered the match 9-1, Umeki defeated Lindsey Hess 6-3, 1-6, 6-3 in her first match at No. 1 singles.
Valle is a perfect 5-0 at No. 1 singles for Stony Brook, helping the Seawolves to a 4-2 start. In all five of her matches, Valle has yet to drop a single set. She helped Stony Brook to its first win over Colgate in program history and recorded big wins against Cornell and Dartmouth. In doubles, Valle is 3-3 on the season at No. 2, including an 8-3 win over Colgate.
