Boston University Leads Commissioner?s Cup Standings After Fall Season - AmericaEast.com

BOSTON ? Boston University is currently leading America East’s 2006-07 Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup standings by a slim seven-point margin after completion of the fall athletic season. The Commissioner’s Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and at championship competition in the conference’s 22 sports. Currently, Boston University boasts 126 points to lead second-place University of New Hampshire, which has 119 points. Binghamton University is third with 116 points, followed by University at Albany (108), University of Vermont (100), University of Maine (92), Stony Brook University (79), University of Hartford (64), and UMBC (58).

In a well-balanced fall season, all nine institutions either captured a championship or finished as the runner-up in at least one sport.

Boston University’s point total was bolstered by championships in field hockey and women’s cross country. In addition, the Terriers were regular-season champions in field hockey.

New Hampshire won this year’s men’s cross country championship, while the women’s cross country team finished runner-up. In addition, the men’s and women’s soccer teams also added significantly to the Wildcat total.

Binghamton University received the majority of its points by winningr the men’s soccer championship and its regular-season title. The volleyball team also made a major impact with a strong regular-season showing and postseason appearance.

Albany won the regular-season and postseason title in volleyball and also earned a share of the regular-season crown in field hockey. 

Vermont earned a significant amount of points with a runner-up finish in men’s soccer and scored points with postseason appearances in women’s soccer and field hockey.

The majority of Maine’s fall points came through a pair of runner-up finishes in women’s soccer and field hockey.

Stony Brook finished runner-up in men’s cross country and earned significant points with postseason appearances in men’s soccer and volleyball.

Hartford won this year’s women’s soccer regular-season and postseason championship, which garnered the majority of the Hawks’ fall points.

UMBC earned points with its runner-up finish in volleyball.

The Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is named in honor of the first commissioner of America East. Haskell served as commissioner of the conference from 1987 until his retirement in 1997.

The scoring system for the Stuart P. Haskell, Jr. Commissioner’s Cup is as follows: In sports where regular-season round robin competition is conducted, the first-place institution in the final standings receives four points times the total number of teams involved in conference play. The second-place institution receives four less points; third place receives eight less points, and so on. Additionally, the America East (tournament) champion receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place receives four less points and so on down to the last-place institution which receives two points.

In sports where regular-season round robin competition is not conducted (cross country, golf, tennis, track and field, swimming and diving), the first-place institution at the America East championship receives two points times the total number of teams participating in the championship. The second-place institution receives two less points; third place gets four less points and so on down to the last place team which receives two points.
