The final day of the 2006 America East Golf Championships yielded something old and something new at The Oaks course of The International in Bolton, Mass. The University of Hartford men won their 11th conference title, while the Boston University women took home their first-ever league crown.
The Hartford men combined to shoot a 625 over the two-day event as the Hawks stretched their nine-stroke lead after day one into a 14-stroke victory over second-place Binghamton (639). Boston University rounded out the three-team field with a 678.
The 2006 Kenneth J. Pope medalist David Arnold led the Hawks and the entire field with a two-day total of 150 (74-76). Teammates Dustin Wetherup (155) and Jim Reed (161) both put together top-six performances to pace Hartford to its fourth title in six years.
Arnold and Wetherup are joined on the all-conference team by Michael O’Day (152) of Boston University and Binghamton’s Jeff Wolniewicz (159) and Matt Mattingly (159).
On the women’s side, Boston University became the third different team to win the conference crown in the three years of the league title event. The Terriers fired a two-day total of 706 to cruise to a 20-stroke victory over defending champ Hartford (726). University at Albany, the 2004 America East champions, rounded out the three-team field with a 764.
Dierdra Hatfield continued her dominance for Boston University as she earned the women’s Medalist honors after shooting a tourney-best 171. Teammates Lauren Stong and Hannah Barry both put together two-day rounds of 178 to join Hatfield on the all-conference squad. Hartford’s Kerry Hassell (176) and Albany’s Amanda McPhee (177) also garnered all-conference accolades.
Hartford’s Bill Poutre was named men’s Coach of the Year, while Boston University’s Cammy Landry took home women’s Coach of the Year honors.
The stroke-play championship was a 36-hole event, with rounds of 18 holes each day. It marked the first time The International served as host of the conference’s title meet.
