America East Cites Nearly 1,000 for Academic Accolades - AmericaEast.com


A total of 1,093 student-athletes have been named to the 2004-05 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade point averages of 3.0 or higher. Of those, 485 student-athletes were named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the most recent athletic season. These student-athletes join 608 student-athletes, including 268 with grade-point averages of 3.5 better, named to the America East Fall Academic Honor Roll, giving the conference more than 1,700 student-athletes with grade-point averages above 3.0 in the 2004-05 academic year.

The student-athletes were members of teams in the championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's track and field (both indoor and outdoor), men's and women's tennis, men's and women's golf, men's and women's lacrosse, softball and baseball.

University of New Hampshire (132 student-athletes) and Binghamton University (131) had the most representatives named to the Academic Honor Roll. University of Vermont (121), Boston University (120), Stony Brook University (113), University of Maine (110), UMBC (101), University at Albany (100), University of Hartford (89) and Northeastern University (60) followed. Quinnipiac University, an associate member in men's lacrosse, had 16 student-athletes named in that sport.

Hartford had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 89 of its 145 student-athletes (61.4 percent) in winter and spring sports received that distinction. Maine (56.1 percent), New Hampshire (54.8) and Vermont (51.5) were other schools with more than half their student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll.

Binghamton led all institutions with 65 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll. New Hampshire (62), Vermont (59) and Maine (58) were others well represented by student-athletes with grade-point averages at 3.5 or better.

Institutional sport leaders were: men's basketball, Hartford and Vermont (5); women's basketball, Vermont (9); men's swimming and diving, UMBC (15); women's swimming and diving, Maine (20); men's indoor and outdoor track and field, New Hampshire (33); women's indoor and outdoor track and field, New Hampshire (58); men's golf, Hartford (5); women's golf, Boston University (9); men's tennis, Boston University (7); women's tennis, Hartford and UMBC (7 each); men's lacrosse, Vermont (19); women's lacrosse, Stony Brook (16); softball, Maine (15); and baseball, Binghamton and Vermont (13 each).

Some of the top student-athletes in America East named to the Academic Honor Roll include Taylor Coppenrath of Vermont, the three-time America East Men's Basketball Player of the Year, who received a perfect 4.00; Kim Corbitt of Maine, the America East Women's Basketball Player and Defensive Player of the Year; Melissa Lague, the Most Outstanding Women's Swimmer, at the America East Swimming and Diving Championship; Rory Quiller of Binghamton and Tramaine Shaw of Northeastern, the Most Outstanding Men's and Women's Field Performers at the America East Indoor Track and Field Championship; Diane Onofry of Albany, who has won or shared medalist honors at each of the first two America East Women's Golf Championships; Zeynep Altinay of Binghamton, the America East Women's Tennis Player of the Year; Adam Grossman of UMBC, the Most Outstanding Men's Track Performer at the America East Outdoor Track and Field Championship; and Jamie Haas of Boston University, a three-time choice as America East Player of the Year in softball.
