Altamont, N.Y.—The 17th annual America East Men’s Golf Championship and second America East Women’s Golf Championship will be held Monday and Tuesday at the Orchard Creek Golf Club in Altamont, N.Y. The stroke-play championship is a 36-hole event, with rounds of 18 holes each day. It is the first time Orchard Creek has hosted the America East Championship.
Last year on the men’s side, University of Hartford won its conference best 10th title, and third championship in four years last season with a score of 617 at the Blackledge Country Club in Hebron, Conn. Hartford has finished either first or second every championship dating back to 1998. Binghamton University, coming off its first title in 2003, finished runner-up with a score of 625.
Sophomore Matt Burroughs, who won medalist honors with a 149 last season, leads the Hawks again this season. He is joined by sophomore Dustin Wetherup and junior Marc Jemilo, who shot 157 and 158, respectively, in the championship last season.
University at Albany women’s team will look defend its title from a year ago, the America East’s inagural Women’s Golf Championship. The Great Danes led the three-team field with a score of 723. Boston University finished second, shooting a 743 over the 36-hole event. Hartford placed third with a score of 793.
Albany returns three of the top five finishers from a season ago in seniors Diane Onofry, Jill Friedman and Anne Lyons, who finished first, second, and fifth, respectively. Onofry won the women’s Medalist Honors shooting a 36-hole score of 172. Back for Boston University are sophomore Haley Goucher and senior Leah Johnson. Goucher shot a 182 to finish third, while Johnson finished fourth with a score of 183. Hartford’s top returnee is junior Jo-Anna Krupa who shot a 189 to place seventh a year ago.
Binghamton, Boston University, and Hartford will compete for the men’s title. Albany, Boston University and Hartford will vie for the women’s championship.
