Stony Brook’s David Kortum (Melbourne, Australia/Melbourne University) and UMBC’s Adriana Fonseca (Bogota, Columbia/Mayor de los Andes) have been named the Men’s and Women’s Tennis Performers of the Week, respectively. The awards were announced Tuesday (April 19).
Kortum went 4-0 this week as the Seawolves defeated Holy Cross and New Hampshire. Losing only four games in two matches, he picked up straight set wins at No. 2 and No. 3 singles. Teaming with fellow freshman Jonathan Gamberg (Brooklyn, N.Y./Midwood), he defeated the team from Holy Cross 8-2 at No. 2 doubles before down the No. 3 team from UNH 8-1. For the year, Kortum has posted a 12-5 singles record, 10-4 in dual match competition, playing in the No. 2 through No. 5 spots in the Seawolve’s lineup.
Fonseca was a perfect 8-0 on the week at No. 3 singles and No. 2 doubles as UMBC won four straight matches. She improved her marks at No. 3 singles to 11-7 and her doubles mark to 9-8. In UMBC’s toughest test of the week, a 4-2 win at Bucknell, Fonseca defeated Tanya Sichko, 6-2, 6-0. Fonseca has won ten straight singles matches for the Retrievers.
