Three Academic All-Americans are among America East's Scholar-Athlete winners announced today by Chris Monasch, Commissioner of America East. Junior Alon Lubezky of the University of Hartford men's soccer team, senior Lana Khvalina of the UMBC women's tennis team and senior Kristal Kostiew of the University of Vermont women's indoor track and field team, each of whom earned Academic All-America honors in 2003-04, highlight the top student-athletes in the conference's 22 sports.
A committee of athletics administrators and NCAA Faculty Athletics Representatives chose the honorees from the nearly 3,500 student-athletes who competed at America East institutions in 2003-04. Each honoree was a starter or prominent reserve on his or her team and has a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.20. First-year students, including transfer students, are not eligible for these honors.
Lubezky is a three-time selection to the America East all-conference first team. An economics and finance major who has earned Dean's List status in each of his six semesters at Hartford, he already owns the school record for goals in a career (52) and enters the 2004 season five points shy of the career scoring record. Khvalina is a two-time selection as a first-team Academic All-American. She completed her bachelor's degree in political science in three years with a perfect 4.0 grade-point average and was recently selected to receive an NCAA Postgraduate Scholarship. Khvalina posted a 62-20 record in singles competition in her career and twice competed in the NCAA Championships. Kostiew, who graduated with a bachelor's degree in physical education, was a 14-time conference champion in the weight throw and discus events at the indoor and outdoor track and field championships. She competed in four NCAA Championships during her career.
University of Maine senior Jacob Jentzer of the men's swimming and diving team was the only repeat selection from the 2002-03 America East Scholar-Athletes. Jentzer, who graduated with a 3.99 grade-point average as a biochemistry and psychology major with a minor in premedical studies, was the 100 freestyle champion at the 2002 America East Swimming and Diving Championship and finished fourth in the 100 butterfly and fifth in the 100 freestyle at the conference championship in 2004.
Junior Jill Friedman of the University at Albany women's golf team, junior John Eleby of the Albany men's lacrosse team, junior Kim Corbitt of the Maine women's basketball team, and junior David Hehn of the Vermont men's basketball team, all competed on conference championship teams in 2003-04. Friedman, a business administration major, finished second at the America East Championship with a 36-hole score of 176 while leading the Great Danes to the title. Eleby, a criminal justice major, was part of a defensive unit which allowed just 10.38 goals per game en route to its second-straight America East Championship. Corbitt, a biomedical engineering major, was the 2003 America East Defensive Player of the Year and was second in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (112:54) last season while leading the Black Bears to a 25-7 overall record. Hehn, a business administration major, helped the Catamounts to their second-straight America East Championship. He was third in the conference in assist-to-turnover ratio (80:36).
Other scholar-athlete selections include: junior Andy Allstadt (men's cross country) and senior Andee Lindgren (softball) of Albany; sophomore Brad Moulton (men's golf) and Yun Qu (women's swimming and diving) of Binghamton University; senior Julia Nazzer (women's cross country) of Boston University; senior Jeanette Akerlund (women's soccer) of Hartford; junior Aaron Izaryk (baseball) and senior Rebecca Ouellet (field hockey) of Maine; sophomore Adam Grossman (men's indoor track and field; men's outdoor track and field) of UMBC; senior Lesley Read (women's outdoor track and field) of University of New Hampshire; and senior Egil Anonsen (men's tennis), senior Rachel Goldsmith (volleyball) and sophomore Marissa Trachtenberg (women's lacrosse) of Stony Brook University.

Moulton, who majors in accounting, had the low team stroke average for the Bearcats in 2003 and helped lead Binghamton to its second-straight NCAA Championship appearance this past spring. Qu, a human development major, holds four conference titles and competed at the NCAA Championships in 2003 and 2002, when she was named an All-American.
Nazzer, who majors in human physiology, was a member of the 2001 and 2002 America East Championship teams. Akerlund, who graduated with a degree in economics and finance, was a four-time America East all-conference choice.
Izaryk, a kinesiology and physical education major, has earned all-conference honors in each of his three seasons. Ouellet, who graduated with a degree in mechanical engineering, was a first-team all-conference selection for the Black Bears, who posted a record of 15-6 in 2003 while reaching the conference championship game.
