Hebron, Conn. ? The University of Hartford men and the University at Albany women golf teams lead after day one of the 2004 America East Golf Championships on the Anderson's Glen Course of the Blackledge Country Club in Hebron, Conn. Day One Results
The Hartford men had four of the top-five individual scores enroute to posting a team tally of 306. Matt Burroughs paced all Hawks with a 74, which was tied by Binghamton's Jeff Wolniewicz. David Markle (77), Mark Jemilo (77) and Destin Wetherup (78) were the other top performers for Hartford.
Binghamton is in second-place overall with a score of 319. Wolniewicz was the ace for the Bearcats, while Keith Hendrickson (80) and Joe Kunz (81) also managed to crack into the top-10. Boston University (347) sits in third place as Bradley Mendel recorded the top score for the Terriers on the day with a 10th-place 83.
On the women's side, Albany (349) has a healthy 21-stroke cushion over Boston University (370) after round one. The Great Danes' Diane Onofry (84), Jill Friedman (86), Anne Lyons (88) and Lauren Bruce (91) posted the top four individual scores of the day, while teammate Diane Wasileski shot in the top-10 with a 96.
Boston University's Haley Goucher led the Terriers as she tied Bruce's 91 for fourth on the day. Brenna Gibson (92), Kara Vaneck (93) and Leah Johnson (94) were the other Boston U. golfers to score as they rounded out the top-10.
The America East Championship, which is in its 16th year for the men and the inaugural year for the women, is stroke play with the top four of a team’s five golfers counting toward the score in each round.
The America East Golf Championship concludes with 18 holes Tuesday, also at Blackledge Country Club.
