Boston University Wins 10th Straight Women's Tennis Championship - AmericaEast.com


BOSTON- Boston University defeated University of Maryland, Baltimore County, 4-1, to win its 10th-straight America East Women's Tennis Championship at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. The Terriers receive the conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Tennis Championship, May 14-16.

The top-seeded Terriers, who dropped the doubles point to the second-seeded Retrievers, rebounded with four-straight singles wins to earn the title, their 14th in the 15-year history of the league championship. Boston University did not compete in the 1993 league championship, marking the only season it did not come away with the conference crown.

Boston U. dominated singles competition by winning the necessary points needed in its first four singles and leading in the final two when the match was secured. Lindsey Dynof defeated Tia Kaasalainen 6-1, 7-6 at first singles, Elena deMendoza was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Ale Pedergnana at second singles, Erin Katims downed Aimee Lim 6-0, 6-0 at third singles and Elisa Glas topped Lana Khvalina 6-3, 6-0 at fourth singles. Laura Ahmes led Adriana Fonseca 5-2 at fifth singles and Aimee Charest was ahead of Elizabeth Anderson 2-1 at sixth singles when both matches were suspended with the team result decided.

The Retrievers won the doubles point with two-of-three wins. Kaasalainen and Khvalina downed Katims and Charest (8-3) at No. 1 and Pedergnana and Lim defeated Ahmes and Glas (9-8) at No. 2 to earn the point for UMBC. Boston University's deMendoza and Monica Shepherd were victorious over Fonseca and Anderson (8-3) at third doubles.

Boston University's deMendoza was named the Most Outstanding Performer. She was joined on the all-conference team by teammates Charest, Dynof, Hernandez, Katims and Shepherd, Courtney Michels (Albany), Melis Altinay (Binghamton), Lya Kushnirovich (Binghamton), Janine Sadaka (Binghamton), Sherri Stern (Binghamton), Halley Werner (Hartford), Fonseca (UMBC), Kaasalainen (UMBC), Lim (UMBC), Pedergnana (UMBC), Lensey Dixon (New Hampshire), Tiffany Heineman (New Hampshire), Jess Pasay (New Hampshire), Georgia Bushell (Stony Brook), Anne Catherine Valle (Stony Brook), Meg Helstowski (Vermont), Lauren Koenig (Vermont) and Molly Moran (Vermont). Lesley Sheehan of Boston University, in her 19 seasons at the helm of the Terriers, was named Coach of the Year for the fourth time.

The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
