America East Conference will hold its Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn. Friday (April 30) through Sunday (May 2).
The Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championships are team-match format with the finals scheduled to be held on Sunday at 12 noon. Both champions receive automatic bids to the NCAA Championships.
Boston University, which has won each of the 13 previous America East Women’s Tennis Championships in which it participated, is again the top seed on the women’s side. America East newcomer University of Maryland, Baltimore County (UMBC) is the second seed, followed by Stony Brook University. University of New Hampshire is the No. 4 seed, while Binghamton University is seeded No. 5 and University of Vermont, the only school other than Boston University to win the championship, is No. 6. The Catamounts won the 1993 America East Championship. No. 7 University of Hartford and No. 8 University at Albany round out the women’s field.
Stony Brook is the top seed in the men’s field, after finishing runner-up in last year’s championship. UMBC is also slated second on the men’s side, while 2003 America East Champion Binghamton is No. 3. Four-time league champions Boston U. and Hartford are seeded No. 4 and No. 5 respectively. Boston U. won titles in 1996, 1994, 1993 and 1988, while Hartford won championships in 2002, 1995, 1990 and 1989. Vermont (No. 6) and New Hampshire (No. 7) close out the men’s field of seven.
First round matches begin Friday morning and Saturday is highlighted by semifinal matches. The men’s and women’s championships are Sunday at noon.
