Binghamton University and Stony Brook University both posted semifinal wins to advance to the championship match of the America East Men's Tennis Championship today at the Rocky Hill Tennis Center in Rocky Hill, Conn. The winner of the America East Men’s Tennis Championship, which will be decided Sunday, receives an automatic bid to the NCAA Championship. The match format changed to singles first and a first to four points format due to the matches being moved indoor due to inclement weather.

Binghamton posted wins at four of the six singles matches to advance to its first America East Men's Tennis Championship final. The match was decided at sixth singles when Steve Spenser posted a come-from-behind 1-6, 7-5 (7-6), 7-5 (7-4) win over Evan Sideman. A Sideman victory would have forced doubles play. Akshay Rao won at first singles for the Bearcats, defeating Pedja Zdravkovic, 7-5, 7-5. Brad Sherwood (6-2, 6-3 over Clint Broadie) and Brian O'Connor, a 7-5 (7-6), 6-1 winner over Christoffer Hartmann, posted wins at fourth and fifth singles respectively. Hartford's wins came from Patrick Flint (6-3, 6-4 over Brad Davidoff) at second singles, and Jeff Hurlbert (6-4, 6-2 over Edwin Gerard) at third singles.

Stony Brook took four of the five completed singles matches to advance to the America East Championship match for the second consecutive year. Michael Crooks (6-4, 6-0 over Matthew Spring), Egil Anonsen (6-0, 6-1 over Tom Whittaker), Jean Francois Robitaille (7-6 (7-3), 6-1), and Philippe Amireault (6-2, 6-3 over Jonathan Cooper) posted wins at second through fifth singles, respectively, for the Seawolves, who look to win their first America East championship after falling, 4-1, to Hartford in last year's championship match. Vermont won its point at first singles, where Zeljko Knezevic defeated Gareth Williams, 6-3, 6-3. Stony Brook's James Carpenter led Vermont's Eric Conway 7-5, 3-0, at sixth singles when the match was halted due to the team score having been decided.

Binghamton posted a 4-3 win over Stony Brook earlier this season.

The America East Tennis Championship utilizes a format of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team winning two or more of the doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
