A total of 926 student-athletes have been named to the 2001-02 America East Winter/Spring Academic Honor Roll for earning grade point averages of 3.0 or higher it was announced today by Chris Monasch, Commissioner of America East Conference. Included in the group were 403 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll, acknowledging grade-point averages of 3.5 or higher during the most recent athletic season.
The student-athletes were members of teams in the 15 championship sports which America East offered in the winter and spring seasons including men's and women's basketball, men's and women's swimming and diving, men's and women's indoor track and field, men's and women's tennis, golf, men's and women's lacrosse, men's and women's outdoor track and field, baseball and softball.
Member institutions of America East Conference for 2001-02 included University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of Maine, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern University, Stony Brook University and University of Vermont. Quinnipiac University was an associate member in the sport of men’s lacrosse.
Binghamton had the most representatives named to the Academic Honor Roll as 168 Bearcat student-athletes were selected. New Hampshire and Vermont each had 121 student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll. Maine followed with 108 student-athletes receiving honors. Boston University (96), Albany (87), Northeastern (85), Stony Brook (77) and Hartford (63) rounded out the schools.
Binghamton also had the highest percentage of student-athletes named to the Academic Honor Roll as 168 of its 268 student-athletes (63 percent) received that distinction. New Hampshire (58 percent) and Maine (51 percent) were other schools with more than half their total student-athletes named to the honor roll.
Binghamton had 77 student-athletes named to the Commissioner's Honor Roll to lead all institutions. Vermont (61), Maine (57) and New Hampshire (53) were others well represented by student-athletes with grade-point averages at 3.5 or better.
Institutional sport leaders were: men's basketball, Binghamton (8 student-athletes); women's basketball, Binghamton (15); men's swimming and diving, Boston University (13); women's swimming and diving, Maine (18); men's indoor and outdoor track and field, Maine (29); women's indoor and outdoor track and field, New Hampshire (51); golf, Binghamton (6); men's tennis, Boston University (8); women's tennis, Binghamton (9); men's lacrosse, Binghamton and Quinnipiac (17); women's lacrosse, Binghamton (13); baseball, Binghamton (19); and softball, Binghamton and Vermont (9).
