America East to Crown Champions in Swimming and Diving, Indoor Track and Field - AmericaEast.com


The America East Conference will conduct championships in the sports of Swimming and Diving and Indoor Track and Field this weekend.

The 12th annual America East Men's and Women's Swimming and Diving Championships will be held at the Stanley Wallace Pool at the University of Maine in Orono on Friday, February 15, Saturday, February 16 and Sunday, February 17.

The America East Men's and Women's Indoor Track and Field Championships will take place Saturday, February 16 at the Boston Armory on the Boston University campus. Field events begin at 9 a.m. with track events scheduled to start at 10:30 a.m. It is the 13th annual championship for the men and the 12th-straight year the conference has sponsored a championship for the women.

Last year the University of Vermont ended Boston University's two-year stronghold on the Women's Indoor Track and Field Championship. Northeastern University won its second-straight Men's Indoor Track and Field Championship and seventh overall.

Northeastern has won two-straight Women's Swimming and Diving titles. The Men's Swimming and Diving Championship appears wide open following the departure of Drexel University and the University of Delaware, which have combined to win each of the last five conference championships.

Maine senior Krystal Fogler, who owns the America East record in both the 100 and 200 backstroke, has been named the meet Most Outstanding Performer in each of the past two years. Senior Katie Mailman of Northeastern, the 2001 Most Outstanding Diver, also returns.

Trials begin Friday at 11 a.m. in the 500-yd. freestyle, 200-yd. individual medley, 50-yd. freestyle, women's three-meter diving and men's one-meter diving. Championships, which begin at 6 p.m., will be decided in those events, as well as the 200-yd. freestyle relay and the 400-yd medley relay.

Saturday's trials begin at 11 a.m. in the 400-yd individual medley, 100-yd. butterfly, 200-yd. freestyle, 100-yd. breaststroke, 100-yd. backstroke and women's one-meter diving. Finals, which begin at 6 p.m. will be held in those events, as well as the 200-yd. medley relay and the 800-yd freestyle relay.

Sunday's trials begin at 11 a.m. in the 200-yd. backstroke, 100-yd. freestyle, 200-yd. breaststroke, 200-yd. butterfly, 1,650-yd. freestyle and men's three-meter diving. Championships start at 5:30 p.m. in those events and the 400-yd. freestyle relay.

Each of the nine America East institutions--University at Albany, Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, Maine, University of New Hampshire, Northeastern, Stony Brook University and Vermont-- will compete at the Indoor Track and Field Championships.

Binghamton, Boston University, Maine, New Hampshire, Northeastern (women only), Stony Brook and Vermont will vie for the Swimming and Diving Championships.
