The 2002 America East Men’s and Women’s Tennis Championship will return to a single-site format after a one-year absence. The championships will be held Friday, April 26 through Sunday April 28 at a site to be announced. Last season, the conference conducted the Men’s Tennis Championship at the Roy L. Patrick Multi-Purpose Facility on the University of Vermont campus in Burlington while the Women’s Tennis Championship was held at the Connecticut Tennis Center in New Haven, Conn.
America East member institutions—University at Albany (women only), Binghamton University, Boston University, University of Hartford, University of New Hampshire, Stony Brook University and Vermont—will compete at the 2002 Tennis Championships.
Boston University has dominated women’s tennis winning each of the 11 championships it has entered. Vermont won the championship in 1993 when Boston University did not compete due to its commitment to the Rolex Championship. Hofstra University won its third-straight men’s championship last spring.
Both the men’s and women’s championship formats consist of three doubles matches and six singles matches. Doubles matches are played first using eight-game pro sets with a 12-point tie-break at eight games all. The team that wins two or more of the three doubles matches receives one point in the team scoring. The doubles matches are followed by the singles matches using a best two-of-three sets format. Each singles match is worth one point. A minimum of four points is required to win the team match.
