Women’s #AEHoops Preview: Feb. 26-28

BOSTON – Vermont can clinch its first outright regular season title since 2002, while three teams look to secure the final top-four seed up for grabs with just two games remaining.
 
Key clinching situations in #AEHoops
  • Vermont can clinch the outright regular season title with a win at UMass Lowell. The Catamounts have already clinched at least of a share of their 2nd title in the past four seasons.
  • UMBC can clinch the No. 4 seed with a win, combined with a Vermont win. The Retrievers could also earn the No. 4 seed with a win if both Binghamton and Maine lose.
  • UAlbany can secure the No. 7 seed with a win.
  • New Hampshire would clinch a spot in the Air Force Reserve #AEPlayoffs with a win, combined with a UMass Lowell loss.
  • UMass Lowell would clinch a spot in the Air Force Reserve #AEPlayoffs with a win, combined with a New Hampshire loss.

UMBC at Bryant – 4:30 PM
  • The Retrievers have won 2 of 3 in their quest for a top-4 seed. The team’s lone loss was Saturday in two overtimes at UAlbany. This past Thursday UMBC took down Vermont 46-44 and has wins over each of the top three seeds. Bryant has won 3 of 5, with losses to Vermont and Maine. The Bulldogs are coming of a 63-60 victory at Binghamton to keep their hopes at a top-4 seed alive.
  • In the first matchup between the two teams, the Retriever defense bottled up Bryant in the first three quarters on the way to a 55-47 win. The Bulldogs shot just 36.5% and were 2 of 12 from three with 14 turnovers. Jade Tillman had 21 points for UMBC as the team shot just 31.3% and made 3 threes with 15 turnovers.
 
Vermont at UMass Lowell – 6 PM
  • The Catamounts have won 4 of 5, with the lone loss 46-44 to UMBC on Thursday. The team rebounded with a 67-37 victory over NJIT on Saturday to clinch at least a share of the regular season title. Vermont is 11-1 in league play when scoring 60+ points. The River Hawks went 1-1 last week, beating New Hampshire 57-54 before falling 69-44 to Binghamton on Saturday. The team is 2-2 over its past four games and looks for a late surge to secure a playoff spot.
  • Vermont jumped out to a 46-23 halftime lead over UMass Lowell in the first meeting between the two teams on the way to an 82-46 victory. Nikola Priede scored 31 points on 14-for-17 shooting, while Keira Hanson and Emma Haan head had four threes. Jaini Edmonds led UML with 16 points and four triples.
 
UAlbany at Maine – 6 PM
  • The Black Bears have won 5 of 6 overall to move into a tie for 2nd in the conference standings. They fell 63-42 to NJIT last Thursday but rebounded with a 67-61 win against New Hampshire on Saturday. UAlbany has won 2 of 3, with victories over UMBC by 11 and UMBC by six in two overtimes on Saturday. The Great Danes offense has scored 60+ in each of its last two games.
  • Maine earned a 65-60 victory in the first meeting between the two teams. The game was tied after three quarters but the Black Bears pulled away thanks in part to 25 points, nine rebounds and seven assists from Adrianna Smith. Lala Woods add three triples. Martina Borrellas paced UAlbany with 15 points in the loss.
 
Binghamton at New Hampshire – 6 PM
  • The Bearcats snapped a three-game losing streak on Saturday with a 69-44 victory over UMass Lowell. Binghamton had lost to Vermont, UAlbany and Bryant to fall out of first and into a tie for second. The Wildcats are mired in a six-game losing streak, with three of those losses by seven points or less. Most recently they fell 67-61 at Maine, despite leading 52-44 through three quarters.
  • Binghamton earned a 50-42 victory over New Hampshire in the first meeting between the teams this season. The Bearcats held UNH to 30.2% shooting overall with 16 turnovers while shooting just 32.7% themselves. Bella Pucci led all scorers in the game with 20 points while Kendall Bennett had 13 points and 14 rebounds.
