Women’s #AEHoops Week 17: UAlbany Claims Regular Season Crown

BOSTON – On the final day of the regular season, UAlbany was able to secure the best record and the top seed in the upcoming Jersey Mike's #AEPlayoffs. Vermont remained the second seed while a big win helped secure Bryant its highest seeding since joining America East and a home quarterfinal match up on Thursday. 
 
The Week That Was
  • Bryant went 2-0 this week with a win against UMass Lowell on Thursday and another one Saturday against Maine. The Bulldogs secured third place in the #AEPlayoffs for the first time since joining the league. They are seeking their first #AEPlayoff win at home this Thursday against Binghamton.
  • UAlbany pulled away against UMBC, 68-60, on Thursday evening and then took down NJIT on Saturday to secure the top seed in the #AEPlayoffs. It will be their first top seed since 2016.
  • Vermont also went 2-0 this week and secured a top-two seed. The Catamounts took down NJIT on Thursday and followed it up with a 20-point win over UMBC on Saturday. This is the third straight year the Catamounts have been a top three seed in the #AEPlayoffs.
  • Maine started the week strong with a win over New Hampshire but came up short Saturday against Bryant. The Black Bears will be the fourth seed and host NJIT this Thursday.
  • Binghamton won their lone game of the week. The Bearcats took down UMass Lowell Saturday and secured sixth place in the #AEPlayoffs. The team will travel to Bryant Thursday night.
 
Playoff Picture
  • Quarterfinal action gets underway on Thursday, with home games at each of the top four seeds.
    • No. 8. New Hampshire at No. 1 UAlbany – 6:30 p.m.
    • No. 7 UMBC at No. 2 Vermont – 5 p.m.
    • No. 6 Binghamton at No. 3 Bryant – 6 p.m.
    • No. 5 NJIT at No. 4 Maine – 6 p.m.
  • The two highest remaining seeds will host semifinal contests on Monday, March 10 with the Championship taking place on Friday, March 14 at the highest seed remaining.

Need to Know
  • The Great Danes are receiving votes in the College Insider Women’s Mid-Major Top 25.
  • Vermont earned a top-four seed in the conference tournament for a fourth straight year.
  • Kayla Cooper was named to the 15-player mid-season watch list for the Her Hoops Stats Becky Hammon Mid-Major Player of the Year. She is currently the only player in the nation averaging at least 17.0 pts, 7.0 reb, 3.0 ast, 1.5 steals per game & shooting 50% from the field.
  • Maine’s Olivia Rockwood was named to the Women's Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) 'So You Want To Be A Coach' program.
  • Vermont ranks 7th in the nation in scoring defense (52.8), while UAlbany is 8th (53.6). Last season UAlbany was 1st nationally and Vermont was 2nd.

The majority games will air on The AE on ESPN, either ESPN+ or ESPN3, in the United States. Games will also be available internationally on AmericaEast.TV. 2024-25 Weekly Award Winners (March 3)
Player of the Week
Nia Scott, Bryant – So., Forward, Medford Lakes, N.J.
  • Averaged 16.5 points on 81% shooting and 11 rebounds in a pair of wins to help lift Bryant to the No. 3 seed.
  • Recorded a career-high 18 points against Maine while going 7-for-7 from the field and 4-for-4 from the line.
  • This is Scott’s first #AEHoops Player of the Week honor this year.
 
Rookie of the Week
Delanie Hill, UAlbany – Fr., Guard, Charlotte, N.C.
  • Averaged 5.5 points, 3.0 rebounds, and 1.0 steals in a pair of wins to help UAlbany earn the No. 1 seed.
  • Chipped in seven points, two rebounds, a steal, & an assist in a win over UMBC.
  • This is Hill’s second #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor this season.
