#AEBASE Week 5: UMBC Starts League Play 2-1

BOSTON – UMBC took two of three from UMass Lowell in the conference-opening series this past weekend, while Binghamton captured a pair of wins against Holy Cross. NJIT, UAlbany and Bryant also came away with a victory apiece

The Retrievers and River Hawks opened up conference play this weekend. UMBC won the first game 7-6 and then took the second 9-8 on a walk-off. UML rebounded to win the final 4-3. Binghamton also had a strong weekend, beating Holy Cross 16-5 and 6-0 with a loss sandwiched between.

One month into the season, Binghamton ranks seventh nationally in fielding percentage (.985) while UMass Lowell is 13th in doubles per game (2.53).
 
Six teams play midweek games before a complete conference slate this coming weekend. UMBC looks to keep up its strong start as they travel to NJIT for a three-game series. Bryant hosts UAlbany, while Maine and Binghamton face off.

#AEBASE Weekly Award Winners – March 11

Player of the Week
Devan Bade, Binghamton – Sr., Third Base, Southington, Conn.
  • Hit .667 while slugging 1.067 with a .800 on-base percentage in a 3-1 week.
  • Went 4-for-5 in 7-6 win over St. Bonaventure.
  • Finished 4-for-4 with a grand slam and six RBI in a 16-5 win against Holy Cross.
  • This is Bade’s second career #AEBASE Player of the Week honor..
 
Pitcher  of the Week
Nick Remy, UMBC – Jr., Pitcher, Middletown, RI.
  • Pitched 4.0 innings of relief over two games and earned two wins without allowing a hit, walking just one and striking out six.
  • In series opener, entered a tie game with runners at the corners and two outs and got a strikeout to end the threat before working a scoreless 8th and perfect ninth to pick up the win.
  • On Saturday, entered with the bases loaded and one out in extra innings. Induced a  flyout and then struck out the next four batters in a row before UMBC walked it off for the win.
  • This is Remy’s first career #AEBASE Pitcher of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Anthony Mascuilli, UMBC – Fr., Outfield, Levittown, N.Y.
  • Batted .600 while slugging .800 with a .714 on-base percentage and six hits last week.
  • Went 2-for-3 in series opening win over UMass Lowell with two runs.
  • Finished 4-for-4 with four RBI, including a walk-off double in 9-8 victory over UML.
  • This is Mascuilli’s first career #AEBASE Rookie of the Week honor.
