Men's #AEHoops Week 14: Maine & UNH Go 2-0, Earn Weekly Honors

BOSTON – Four teams went unbeaten in men’s #AEHoops action last week, including Maine and UNH both going 2-0. Vermont also won its lone contest of the week while UAlbany, Binghamton and Bryant also picked up victories All America East games can be watched on ESPN+.  
 
The Week That Was
  • Maine swept NJIT and UMBC at home to improve to 8-2 in league play.
  • UNH also swept NJIT and UMBC last week to move to 4-6 in conference play.
  • TJ Hurley scored 21 points to lead Vermont to a 68-62 win over UAlbany on Saturday.
  • UAlbany beat Bryant 68-63 on Thursday, holding the Bulldogs 20 points below their season average. The loss was Bryant’s first conference defeat in nine games.
  • Bryant bounced back from its first defeat with a win vs. Binghamton on Saturday.
  • On Thursday, Binghamton shut down the UMass Lowell, 66-54 to win its third straight game.
 
The Week Ahead
  • Maine looks to snap its 28-game losing skid vs. Vermont when it hosts the Catamounts on Saturday.
  • Bryant hosts NJIT and UMBC next week and can secure a top-four seed for the #AEPlayoffs with wins in both games.
 
Need to Know
  • Maine’s eight league wins are already its most since the 2010-11 season.
  • Binghamton’s Gavin Walsh pulled down a career-high 23 rebounds, tied for the fourth most in #AEHoops history, vs. UMass Lowell on Thursday. The 23 boards are the most by an America East player since 2016 and the most in a regular-season conference game since 1995.
  • Walsh’s 10.8 rebounds per game ranks eighth in the country.  
  • Maine’s Kellen Tynes ranks second nationally averaging 3.2 steals per game.
  • UMass Lowell's Max Brooks ranks second in the country in field goal percentage (.693) and seventh in blocked shots per game (2.7 bpg).
  • NJIT’s Tariq Francis leads the league averaging 18.6 points per game.

Player of the Week

AJ Lopez, Maine - Sr., Guard, Queens, N.Y.
  • Averaged 20.0 points, 4.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists in a 2-0 week for Maine.
  • Shot 55 percent from the floor (12-of-22).
  • Had 23 points, three boards, two assists and two steals in a win over NJIT on Thursday.
  • Followed up with 17 points, five boards and two assists in a win over UMBC on Saturday.
  • This is Lopez’ first career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week

Khalil Badru, New Hampshire – Fr., Guard, New Britain, Conn.
  • Averaged 18.0 points and 5.0 rebounds in a 2-0 week for UNH last week.\
  • Shot 65 percent from the floor (15-of-23).
  • Scored a career-best 21 points and added five rebounds in a win vs. UMBC on Thursday.
  • Had 15 points and five boards in a win over NJIT on Saturday.
  • This is Badru’s second #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor of the season.
