Women’s #AEHoops Jan. 9 Recap

BOSTON – UAlbany improved to 3-0 in conference play while NJIT came through with a second straight impressive victory to stay unbeaten at 2-0 on Thursday night. Binghamton and Vermont both improved to 2-1 in #AEHoops action with wins.
 
Vermont 77, UMass Lowell 52 – Box Score
The Catamounts were buoyed by over 2,000 elementary school students and jumped out to a 22-8 lead after the first quarter and extended the lead to 65-39 after 30 minutes. UVM shot 56.9 percent for the game, led by Anna Olson’s 8-for-9 performance for 18 points and four assists. Nikola Priede added 14 points, six rebounds and three blocks.
 
Binghamton 69, Maine 59 – Box Score
The Bearcats ended the conference’s longest losing streak by taking down Maine 69-59. They had lost 11 straight to the Black Bears, and Maine's Paula Gallego hit a jumper with 3:30 left to trail just 60-59. However, they didn’t score again as Binghamton tallied the final nine points of the contest. Jadyn Weltz had a complete performance with 21 points, six assists, four rebounds and five steals, while Kendall Bennett added 13 points and seven rebounds.
 
UAlbany 59, New Hampshire 32 – Box Score
The Great Dane defense allowed just 16 points in each half and held New Hampshire to 27.5 percent shooting for the contest and just 2-for-20 from deep. Offensively, Kayla Cooper was the only player in the contest to reach double figures, putting up 20 points, six rebounds and three steals in the victory.
 
NJIT 83, UMBC 55 – Box Score
It was a back-and-forth first half, with NJIT holding just a 35-34 advantage. The Highlanders shot 54 percent in the second half while holding UMBC to just 22.6 percent shooting and outscoring them 48-21. Trinity Williams had a season-high 21 points with six rebounds while Olivia Kulyk added 13 points, five rebounds and two assists.
 
Saturday’s contests feature matchups between the top four teams in the preseason poll, as Maine is at UAlbany and Bryant travels to Vermont. NJIT hosts UML looking to go to 3-0 while Binghamton welcomes UNH.
