#AEWSOC Week 6: Bryant, Maine, UNH Win League Openers

BOSTON – League play got underway over the weekend and saw three teams earn their first #AEWSOC wins of the season. Bryant, Maine and New Hampshire were all victorious while UAlbany and UMBC played to a scoreless draw.

Need to Know
  • Maine stayed unbeaten at home by downing Binghamton, 2-1. The Kraemer sisters made up the Black Bears’ scoring efforts as Abby and Kayla both had goals.
  • The Black Bears have won three in a row and are a league-best 5-1-2 on the season.
  • UNH beat Vermont, 2-0, earning their league-best fifth shutout of the year and improving to 6-2-1 in the process.
  • Bryant downed NJIT in a high-scoring affair, 4-3, behind a pair of goals from Makayla Griffin. She earned America East Offensive Player of the Week honors as a result.
  • Four more #AEWSOC league contests take place on Sunday, including UMass Lowell playing its league opener and Binghamton hosting New Hampshire in a highly anticipated matchup.
  • The #AEWSOC preseason poll and All-Conference teams were announced on August 5 - link.
 
Weekly Award Winners – Sept. 23

Offensive Player of the Week
Makayla Griffin, Bryant – Gr., Midfielder, Wrentham, Mass.
  • Scored a pair of goals in Bryant’s 4-3 win over NJIT in the league opener for both teams on Sunday.
  • Only player in the league to score multiple goals last week.
  • Tallied Bryant’s second and third scores of the day, finding the back of the net in the 13th and 38th minutes.
  • This is Griffin’s first career #AEWSOC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Emily Dorfman, UAlbany – So., Goalkeeper, Atlanta, Ga.
  • Recorded an .889 save percentage by stopping 16 of 18 shots she faced in a pair of games last week.
  • Made a league-best eight stops in a conference opener, blanking UMBC to earn her first career shutout in a 0-0 tie.
  • This is Dorfman’s first career #AEWSOC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Kennedy Westbrook, NJIT – R-Fr., Defender, Athens, Pa.
  • Tallied her first career points while playing all 90 minutes vs. Bryant on Sunday. Had a goal and an assist.
  • Scored off a corner kick in the 68th minute after setting up a score earlier in the game.
  • This is Dorfman’s first career #AEWSOC Defensive Player of the Week honors.
