Vermont Beats Colgate, Advances to WNIT Great 8

BURLINGTON, Vt. – Vermont outscored Colgate in each of the final three quarters to come away with a 65-55 victory in the WNIT Super 16 on Friday evening. The Catamounts move on to the Great 8, where they will travel to play at Purdue on Monday evening.
 
UVM’s victory is their second straight in the WNIT, and it marks the program’s second-ever appearance in the Great 8 of the WNIT. In 2002, the Catamounts beat Holy Cross and St. Joseph’s before falling to Virginia Tech in the round of eight. Purdue advanced to the Great 8 with a 71-50 victory over Duquesne, improving to 15-18 on the season.
 
How it Happened:
  • Colgate jumped out to a 10-2 lead in the first five minutes of the contest and pushed the lead to 16-9 with one minute left.
  • UVM’s defense came alive and allowed just four points over the following 11 minutes, while the Catamounts scored 18 points to grab a 27-2 lead at the break.
  • The Raiders managed the close the gap to five points in the third quarter, but UVM answered each run and four straight to end the third provided a 46-37 cushion for the Catamounts.
  • Vermont stretched their lead to 11 three times in the opening five minutes of the fourth on the way to the ten-point victory.
  • The Catamounts shot 50.9 percent in the contest while holding Colgate to 40.7 percent.
  • Four players scored in double figures for UVM, led by Anna Olson with 14 points and eight rebounds. Andjela Matic added 13 points, four assists and four steals off the bench.
