BOSTON – Conference play is officially underway in #AEMLAX and four teams are off 1-0 starts. UAlbany, UMBC, Merrimack and Vermont all won their conference openers. Every win will be crucial as only the top four teams in the conference standings qualify for the America East Championship.
Three of the four contests were decided by three goals or less. UMBC knocked off defending champion Bryant, 13-12 in overtime while Merrimack also prevailed in overtime vs. Binghamton, 10-9. Vermont, last year's regular-season champion, knocked NJIT, who came into the game a perfect 7-0, from the ranks of the unbeatens with a 12-9 win. UAlbany had the most lopsided victory of the day, beating UMass Lowell, 19-8.
The Great Danes visit #3 Virginia on Tuesday in the lone non-conference game of the week before four more conference contests on Saturday. UAlbany hosts Vermont on Saturday, while NJIT welcomes Binghamton. Unbeatens Merrimack and UMBC face off while UMass Lowell is at Bryant.
The preseason poll was announced on January 16.
Fans will once again be able to watch the majority of the #AEMLAX this season. Select games will air on The AE on ESPN while others will air on AmericaEast.TV.
