#AEBASE Week 4: Bryant Sweeps & NJIT Wins Three

BOSTON – Five different programs came away with victories last week, highlighted by Bryant going a perfect 4-0 and NJIT going 3-1 out in California.  

The Bulldogs were very comfortable at home, starting the week with a 9-8 win over Merrimack and then sweeping Iona in a three-game series to improve to 5-7 overall. NJIT won 3 of 4 against Cal. State Bakersfield, while UMass Lowell concluded the weekend by beating Oral Roberts 10-7 and 16-3.
 
Six teams play midweek games as 25 games are on the #AEBASE schedule for this week. On Tuesday, NJIT opens up its new baseball facility by hosting Seton Hall on AETV at 3:30 PM, before traveling west to Binghamton for the league’s first conference games of the year. Elsewhere around #AEBASE, UMass Lowell heads to Penn State while Maine plays at FAU and UAlbany is at Georgetown. UMBC faces Yale in a three-game series while Bryant and Brown battle for Rhode Island supremacy.
   
The preseason poll was announced on January 24.
 
Fans will once again be able to watch the majority of the #AEBASE this season. Select games will air on The AE on ESPN while others will air on AmericaEast.TV. Those games will be available on computers, OTT devices and the brand new America East app, which is available on all IOS and Android devices and can be found by searching ‘America East Conference’ in app stores.

Player of the Week
Austin Francis, NJIT – So., Third Base, Troy, NY
  • Slashed . 571/.647/.786 in a 3-1 weekend for the Highlanders while hitting a home run and knocking in five runs.
  • Went 4-for-4 with two runs and 3 RBI in a 10-8 comeback victory over Bakersfield.
  • Went 2-for-4 with one run in the series finale 6-1 win.
  • This is Francis’ first career #AEBASE Player of the Week honor.
 
Pitcher of the Week
Austin Wainer, Bryant  – Sr., Pitcher, Johns Creek, Ga
  • Posted a 1.80 ERA with one earned run and nine strikeouts in a no-decision against Iona.
  • Went 5.0 IP and allowed just four hits with two walks while facing 21 batters as Bryant came back to beat Iona 4-3.
  • This is Downs’ second career #AEBASE Pitcher of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Cole Campbell, NJIT – R-Fr., Catcher/DH, Somers Point, NJ
  • Hit .714 while slugging .857 with five hits, two runs and two RBI over two games.
  • Went 2-for-3 with one run in a 6-1 win over Bakersfield.
  • This is Campbell’s first career #AEBASE Rookie of the Week honor.
