#AEBASE Week 1: UMass Lowell Impresses on Opening Weekend

BOSTON – UMass Lowell started its 2024 campaign 3-1 to highlight the opening weekend of baseball in the America East.

The River Hawks took three of four from High Point, highlighted by a 10-6 extra inning win in the first contest. Bryant dropped its only contest of the weekend, 12-11 to UCF. Maine was swept by Pitt, while NJIT and Binghamton were also in action.
 
All seven teams are in action this weekend on the road, beginning with each of them playing on Friday. UAlbany faces the toughest test down at Tennessee.
   
The preseason poll was announced on January 24.
 
Fans will once again be able to watch the majority of the #AEBASE this season. Select games will air on The AE on ESPN while others will air on AmericaEast.TV. Those games will be available on computers, OTT devices and the brand new America East app, which is available on all IOS and Android devices and can be found by searching ‘America East Conference’ in app stores.

Player of the Week
Carlos Martinez, UMass Lowell – So., Outfield, Coamo, Puerto Rico
  • Slashed .500/1.222/.550 while recording nine hits, eight RBI and seven extra base hits.
  • In an 11-9 win over High Point, he went 4-for-4 with three home runs, one double and five RBI.
  • Added a 3-for-4 effort in the series finale, a 6-1 victory.
  • This is Martinez’s first career #AEBASE Player of the Week honor.
 
Pitcher of the Week
James Capellupo, UMass Lowell – Fr., Pitcher, Hilton, N.Y.
  • Posted a 0.00 ERA in two appearances while finishing with a 1-0 record in 6 IP.
  • Earned the win against High Point with 2.0 IP, striking out four of the six batters he faced.
  • Earned a save with 4.0 innings of relief, while striking out four batters.
  • This is Capellupo’s first career #AEBASE Pitcher of the Week honor.
Rookie of the Week
Sean O’Leary, UMass Lowell – Fr., Infield, Foxboro, Mass.
  • Slashed 353/.529/.450 in four starts, going 6-for-17 with six RBI.
  • Went 2-for-4 with four RBI and one run in a 10-6 win over High Point.
  • Had two hits with two RBI in an 11-9 win over High Point.
  • This is O’Leary’s first career #AEBASE Rookie of the Week honor.
