Women’s #AEHoops Week 2: UAlbany, Bryant and New Hampshire Win Twice

BOSTON – UAlbany won two contests last week and is the lone unbeaten in women’s #AEHoops, while Bryant and New Hampshire earned a pair of impressive victories as each team improved to 4-1 on the season.
  
The Week That Was
  • The Great Danes started their week with a 58-53 victory over Dartmouth and then took care of business at home, 61-49 over Sacred Heart. Kaya Cooper continued her impressive start to the year, averaging 23.0 points per game last week.
  • New Hampshire is off to its best start since the 2015-16 season, 4-1 overall after going 2-1 last week. After falling to Merrimack on Monday, the Wildcats rebounded with a 58-31 victory over Northeastern and then a 69-60 win against Boston University thanks to a career-high 34 points from Eva DeChent.
  • Bryant is 4-1 and has its best start as a Division I program. The Bulldogs took down CCSU 59-48 on Tuesday and followed that with a 62-54 victory at Rider on Friday. Bryant kept it close with Seton Hall much of Saturday but came up short 55-39.
  • Vermont went 1-1 last week. The Catamounts fell 58-53 to Providence at home, but came back to secure a 67-50 over Holy Cross to conclude the week.
  • UMBC won its only contest of the week, 81-72, over Morgan State.
  • Maine, meanwhile, went 1-1 with a win over URI and a loss to Harvard at home on Sunday.

Looking Ahead
  • There are 18 non-conference games this week, beginning on Monday as Vermont looks to get above .500 when they travel to Dartmouth. The Catamounts they head North as they play a pair of contests on Friday and Saturday in Anchorage, Alaska this weekend.
  • Bryant travels to Cornell on Tuesday and then hosts Stonehill on Friday.
  • UAlbany faces its toughest test of the early season on Wednesday as the Great Danes travel to Syracuse. UNH plays at Boston College, while NJIT, UMass Lowell and UMBC are both home.
  • On Thursday, Maine looks to get back in the win column at Boston University and then on Friday Binghamton is at LIU.
  • This Saturday UNH is down at Howard, while the Great Danes host Cornell and NJIT plays at Merrimack.
  • On Sunday, UMass Lowell is at Butler while the Black Bears host Quinnipiac and UMBC welcomes Manhattan.

Player of the Week
Kayla Cooper, UAlbany – Gr., Guard, Frederick, Md.
  • Averaged 23.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 3.0 steals per game in a pair of wins while shooting 62 percent from the floor.
  • Had 20 points, five rebounds and three steals in a 58-53 win over Dartmouth.
  • Posted 26 points, eight rebounds, three steals and two assists in a 12-point win over Sacred Heart.
  • This is Cooper’s eighth career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Allison Cannon, NJIT – Fr., Guard, Holmdel, N.J.
  • Averaged 10.0 points, 2.0 rebounds and 2.0 assists per game in a 1-1 week.
  • Came off the bench to score 12 points on 4-for-5 shooting in a win over defending NEC Champion Sacred Heart.
  • Finished with eight points and four assists in a loss to defending ASUN Champion Florida Gulf Coast.
  • This is Cannon’s first career #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
