Women’s #AEHoops Week 1: Eight Teams Secure Wins

BOSTON – It was a strong week of women’s #AEHoops action to begin the 2024-25 campaign, as three teams are still unbeaten and the league earned three victories over Atlantic-10 programs, as well as one SEC win.
  
The Week That Was
  • The America East went an impressive 6-2 on opening night, beginning with Maine taking down La Salle in a matinee 65-51.
  • Monday’s biggest win came in Burlington where Vermont took down Missouri 62-46 for the program’s first-ever win over an SEC foe. It’s also their second straight year with a Power 4 victory. Anna Olson led the way with 18 points and seven rebounds.
  • Bryant beat Merrimack 65-50 thanks to 17 points and 10 rebounds from Ali Brigham while NJIT blew out Saint Francis (PA) 80-60 off 20 points from Alejandra Zuniga.
  • The wins continued during the week as New Hampshire beat UMass 48-45 on the road, thanks to a Maggie Cavanaugh basket in the final 15 seconds.
  • Binghamton downed Akron 66-50 with three players scoring in double figures on Wednesday.
  • On Friday, UAlbany started its season with a 67-57 win over URI while NJIT lost a tight contest to Hofstra and Vermont came up short against Minnesota.
  • Over the weekend NJIT fell 94-84 to Rutgers while Maine nearly upended UPenn and UMBC lost by eight to Loyola.

Looking Ahead
  • There are 19 non-conference games this week, beginning on Monday as New Hampshire seeks its first 3-0 start since the 2025-16 season when the Wildcats play Merrimack.
  • On Tuesday, Vermont hosts Providence while Bryant is at CCSU and UMass Lowell travels to Minnesota.
  • Wednesday, NJIT hosts Sacred Heart while Maine is at Rhode Island and UAlbany travels to Dartmouth.
  • Binghamton and New Hampshire are both on the road Thursday, with the Bearcats at Cornell and UNH at Northeastern.
  • Bryant is at Rider on Friday and then Saturday five games take place, highlighted by Bryant playing at Seton Hall.
  • On Sunday there are four more #AEHoops contests, including Maine hosting Harvard, NJIT at FGCU and Binghamton hosting Pitt.

The majority games will air on The AE on ESPN, either ESPN+ or ESPN3, in the United States. Games will also be available internationally on AmericaEast.TV. 2024-25 Weekly Award Winners (Nov. 11)
Player of the Week
Kayla Cooper, UAlbany – Gr., Guard, Frederick, Md.
  • Led UAlbany to a season-opening 67-57 win over Rhode Island on Friday.
  • Posted 17 points and 14 rebounds while shooting 50% from the floor, to go along with 2 steals, as UAlbany beat a URI team which reached the A-10 Championship game a season ago.
  • This is Cooper’s seventh career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Olivia Kulyk, NJIT – Fr., Guard, Edinboro, Pa.
  • Averaged 11.3 points and 4.7 rebounds per game in a 1-2 week.
  • Opened her career with 10 points and two rebounds as NJIT downed Saint Francis 80-60.
  • Put up 13 points and six rebounds in a 74-69 loss to Hofstra.
  • This is Kulyk’s first career #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
