#AEMSOC Week 10: Bryant, UMBC and New Hampshire Move Up the Standings

BOSTON – New Hampshire and Bryant both showed off their firepower, while UMBC handed Vermont its first loss in over two months in a wild weekend of #AEMSOC action.
 
On Saturday, the Retrievers honored their 2014 team which reached the College Cup. They then shut down the top offense in the league and scored just enough to secure a 1-0 home victory against Vermont and move back into playoff contention.
 
Need to Know:
  • New Hampshire scored a season-high five goals to move into a tie for first with Vermont as both teams have 10 points.
  • Bryant tallied a season-best four goals to take down Binghamton 4-1 on Sunday afternoon to move into third place in the standings.
  • NJIT and UMass Lowell played to a 1-1 draw as each continues to battle for a playoff spot.
  • Vermont, New Hampshire and Bryant can all clinch playoff spots with victories, while NJIT, UMBC and Binghamton could also potentially clinch if they win and get some help.
  • The penultimate game date of the regular season takes place on Friday. Vermont travels to face UMass Lowell at 3 p.m. to kick off play, followed by Binghamton hosting UAlbany at 6:07 p.m.
  • Bryant welcomes UMBC for a 7 p.m. contest in Smithfield, while New Hampshire travels to NJIT for a 7 p.m. matchup.
  • The final day of the regular season takes place on Tuesday, Nov. 5 with #AEMSOC Quarterfinal action beginning on Nov. 9.

Matthew Goncalves, New Hampshire – Sr., Forward, Matthew Goncalves
  • Scored a hat trick in just 13 minutes of game action during the second half.
  • Led UNH to a 5-1 victory and a tie atop the #AEMSOC Standings.
  • This is Goncalves’ second career #AEMSOC Offensive Player of the Week honor.
 
Defensive Player of the Week
Emigdio Tormo Lopez, UMBC – Jr., Goalkeeper, Elche, Spain
  • Posted a shutout victory in his lone start of the week.
  • Made five saves, including a highlight-reel stop in the final 20 minutes to shut out No. 16 Vermont on Saturday night.
  • This is Tormo Lopez’s first #AEMSOC Defensive Player of the Week honor this season.
 
Rookie of the Week
Arian Recinos, New Hampshire – Fr., Defender, Stamford, Conn.
  • Collected first career point, dishing off a pass to Matthew Goncalves for a second-half goal.
  • This is Recinos’ first #AEMSOC Rookie of the Week honor.

The America East is one of the best men’s soccer conferences in the country. In 2023 the league finished sixth in RPI among all conferences and three teams were selected to the NCAA Tournament. Overall The conference has received multiple bids to the NCAA tournament in four of the past eight seasons, with Vermont and New Hampshire reaching each of the past three years. Four different teams have reached the third round of the NCAA tournament since 2014, highlighted by UMBC getting all the way to the College Cup in 2014.
