Women's Basketball 1/22/2024 11:00:00 AM Women's #AEHoops Week 11: Three Teams Go 2-0 BOSTON – Maine had one of the most impressive #AEHoops wins of the year on the way to 2-0 last week, while UAlbany also won both of its contests to set up a battle for first place this coming Thursday. New Hampshire also went 2-0 last week. The Week That Was Maine won its first game of the week by 27 points and then used an all-around team performance to take down NJIT 81-39 on Saturday. UAlbany went on a run over the final minutes of action to slip past Bryant 64-62 on Saturday, after beating UMass Lowell 65-49 on Thursday. The Wildcats scored 56 points in each of its two wins, beating NJIT 56-50 and then locking down on UMBV 56-37. Vermont won its lone game of the week, 51-38 over Binghamton, while the Bearcats earned their first #AEHoops win with a 70-65 victory over UMass Lowell. Looking Ahead The Great Danes and Black Bears are tied atop the conference standings at 5-0 and meet for the first time this season on Thursday in Albany. Whoever wins will take sole possession of first place in the league. Maine has won its first five conference games by an average of 24.2 points per game, while UAlbany has won its five contests by 16.0 points per game. They also boast the top two individual scorers and rebounders in #AEHoops action. Vermont is quietly 4-1 in conference action and hosts a pair of contests this week, welcoming UMass Lowell for an 11 a.m. tip-off on Thursday and then facing Bryant on Saturday. Binghamton is also home this week and looks move up the standings with games against New Hampshire and Maine. NJIT seeks its first conference win with games against Bryant and UMBC this week. The women’s #AEHoops preseason poll was announced on Oct. 19. 2023-24 Weekly Award Winners (Jan. 22) Player of the Week Kayla Cooper, UAlbany – Sr., Guard, Frederick, Md. Averaged 24.0 points, 10.5 rebounds, 2.0 assists in a pair of wins last week. Had a career-high 26 points with 12 rebounds and made consecutive baskets in the final 70 seconds to give UAlbany the lead for good over Bryant. Finished with 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks in a win over UMass Lowell. This is Cooper’s second #AEHoops Player of the Week honor this year. Rookie of the Week Maggie Cavanaugh, New Hampshire – Fr., Guard, Point Pleasant Beach, N.J. Averaged 13.0 points, 4.5 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 2.0 steals in a pair of wins. Posted 13 points, four rebounds, three assists and two steals in a win over NJIT. Had 13 points, five boards, three assists and two steals against UMBC. This is Cavanaugh’s first #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
