BOSTON – UAlbany and Maine earned a pair of impressive victories to stay perfect in conference play while Vermont improved to 4-1 and New Hampshire claimed its first #AEHoops win on Thursday night.
UAlbany 65, UMass Lowell 49 – Box Score
It’s 11 straight wins for the Great Danes after withstanding a tough third quarter rally from UMass Lowell in front of a raucous crowd of over 3,000 children. UAlbany led 29-16 at the half, but the River Hawks closed the gap to just 43-36 in the final 30 seconds of the third. The Great Danes locked down in the fourth for the win. Kayla Cooper was dominant with 22 points, nine rebounds and two blocks, while Helene Haegerstrand added 16 points, six rebounds and five assists. Sydney Watkins had 16 points, six rebounds and four assists for UML.
Maine 76, UMBC 47 – Box Score
The Black Bears started slow, but outscored the Retrievers 41-22 over the second and third quarters. They outscored the Retrievers by 11 in the final quarter for the 29-point win. Adrianna Smith was all over the court with 33 points, 12 rebounds and one block while Anne Simon had ten points and nine assists. Anna Blount was in double figures for UMBC with 13 points, seven rebounds and three assists.
New Hampshire 56, NJIT 50 – Box Score
The Wildcats earned their first conference victory and led 18-10 after the first period. NJIT rebounded to lead by four after three quarters. NJIT tied the contest up at 42 and 45, but UNH answered each time and outscored the Highlanders 11-5 over the final five minutes. Breezie Williams came through with 11 points and three rebounds while Maggie Cavanaugh came off the bench with 13 points, four rebounds and three assists. Alejandra Zuniga scored a game-high 18 points with three steals in the loss.
Vermont 51, Binghamton 38 – Box Score
Three consecutive wins for UVM who improved to 4-1 in league play with a strong defensive effort. Binghamton led 13-8 after the first, but the Catamounts outscored the Bearcats 43-25 over the final three quarters to earn the win. Anna Olson paced a balanced attack with 11 points and five rebounds, while Bella Vito had six points, six rebounds and four steals. Genevieve Coleman led Binghamton with 17 points and six rebounds.
Saturday, January 20
UMBC (2-3 AE) at New Hampshire (1-4 AE) – 12 PM
The Retrievers have dropped three straight games by double digits and looks to stop that streak at UNH. The Wildcats won their first conference game on Thursday after falling 55-54 to Bryant last Saturday.
NJIT (0-4 AE) at Maine (4-0 AE) – 1 PM
Maine has been dominant in conference play, winning each of its #AEHoops contests by 12 points. They’ve surpassed 75 points in each of their last two, with Adrianna Smith averaging 30.5 points and 13.5 rebounds per game over that span. NJIT has stumbled on offense lately but will look for the road upset.
UAlbany (4-0 AE) at Bryant (2-2 AE) – 2 PM
The Great Danes have won 11 straight, while the Bulldogs have won two straight. Kayla Cooper ranks third in the league in scoring at 16.1 points per game, while Bryant’s duo of guard Mia Mancini (15.5) and forward Mariona Planes Fortuny (15.4) have been trouble for opposing defenses.
Binghamton (0-4 AE) at UMass Lowell (3-2 AE) – 2 PM
The River Hawks had their three-game win streak snapped against UAlbany but look to bounce back at home on Saturday. The Bearcats, meanwhile, are searching for their first win in conference play. Genevieve Coleman is averaging a team-best 13.0 points and 5.8 rebounds in conference play.
