Men's #AEHoops Jan. 18 Recap

BOSTON – UMass Lowell and Vermont both had dominant road victories to improve to 4-0 in #AEHoops action while New Hampshire moved back to .500 and UMBC captured its first conference victory of the season.
 
Vermont 82, Binghamton 62 – Box Score
The Catamounts held just a four-point lead at the half but broke out for 51 second-half points to turn the game into a rout. They got a 44 points from their bench, including three in double figures. Sam Alamutu had 13 points, four rebounds and two assists, while Nick Fiorillo added 12 point and four boards as UVM shot 69% in the second half. Binghamton was led by Tymu Chenery’s 16 points with Armon Harried adding eight points and ten boards.
 
UMass Lowell 97, UAlbany 76 – Box Score
The first half was back-and-forth, as UAlbany grabbed a 32-31 lead with just 5:40 left in the first half and trailed just 44-43 at the half. Over the final ten minutes of regulation UMass Lowell went on a 26-7 run to put the game out of reach. Senior Max Brooks was all over the court with 22 points, ten rebounds and four blocks, while Ayinde Hikim added 23 points and eight assists. Amar’e Marshall led the Great Danes with 30 points and Jonathan Beagle posted another double-double of 12 points and 12 boards.
 
New Hampshire 70, NJIT 62 – Box Score
Both teams took leads in the first half and NJIT led 30-27 on a three by Adam Hess in the final 30 seconds, before Naim Miller drilled a three in the last second to even the score 30-30. The Highlanders grabbed a three-point lead three minutes in the second, however, UNH took back the lead with 13 minutes left and never gave it up again, holding off NJIT late. Ahmad Robinson had 18 points, eight rebounds and four assists while Christian Moore added 11 off the bench. Adam Hess led NJIT with 21 points. Levi Lawal added 11 points and 12 rebounds.  
 
UMBC 70, Maine 65 – Box Score
The Retrievers earned their first conference victory of 2024 by outlasting the Black Bears. They led by four at the half, but Maine came back to grab a second-half lead and the score was tied 62-62 with just two minutes remaining. UMBC outscored Maine 8-3 the rest of the way to secure the victory. Max Lorca-Lloyd was a force with seven points, seven rebounds, five assists and four blocks, while Dion Brown had a team-high 21 points. Maine shot just 29% in the second half and four players scored in double figures, though none had more than 13 points.
 
SATURDAY, JANUARY 20
New Hampshire (2-2 AE) at UMBC (1-3 AE) – 1 PM
Two of the most prolific three-point shooting teams in the league battle in a fast-paced contest. Clarence Daniels is third in #AEHoops scoring (21.0), while Dion Brown (17.2) is close behind in forth.
 
UMass Lowell (4-0 AE) at Binghamton (0-3 AE) – 2 PM
The River Hawks look to stay perfect when they travel to Binghamton. In league play UML is averaging a league-best 83.8 points per game, while the Bearcats are currently ninth in scoring defense at 84.7 points per contest.
 
Maine (0-3 AE) at NJIT (0-4 AE) – 2 PM
Both the Black Bears and Highlanders are looking for a first conference victory. The two teams rank eighth and ninth in scoring offense, but Maine is third in scoring defense (71.3), while NJIT is fifth at (73.8) in #AEHoops action.
 
Bryant (3-0 AE) at UAlbany (2-1 AE) – 7 PM
Two of the best offenses in the league battle on Saturday. The Bulldogs are third in scoring at 82.3 points in conference play while UAlbany is second at 83.3. The two top scorers in league play are also in the contest, with Sherif Gross-Bullock (28.7) and Sebastian Thomas (21.3) ranking first and second.
