BOSTON – The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association released its Academic Top 25 Team Honor Roll for Division I, recognizing UAlbany and Maine for posting two of the top five cumulative team GPAs in the country.
UAlbany finished the year with a 3.791 team GPA under head coach Colleen Mullen, which was the second-highest GPA in the nation among Division I schools and tenth in the country regardless of division. Maine, led by head coach Amy Vachon, placed fifth among Division I programs with a 3.766 GPA. It is the third straight season the Black Bears have finished in the top-five nationally.
The WBCA also gave special recognition to those programs with over a 3.0 team GPA and the America East had two schools recognized, NJIT (3.490 GPA) and Binghamton (3.394 GPA).
UAlbany is coming off a 22-11 season in which the Great Danes won a share of the regular season championship and advanced to the conference title game for a second straight season. Maine, meanwhile, went 16-14 and finished third in conference with an 11-5 overall record, advancing to the America East Semifinals.
The Black Bears and Great Danes are two of the most storied programs in the America East. One of the two schools has appeared in each of the past 12 America East Women’s Basketball Championship Games, capturing a combined nine conference titles over that span.
