BOSTON – United Soccer Coaches released its 2023 Preseason Men’s Soccer Poll on Tuesday afternoon and Vermont was selected 12th, while New Hampshire was ranked 23rd in the nation to begin the season.
The America East was one of eight conferences nationwide to have two teams ranked in the top 25. Both programs concluded the 2022 campaign in the top-25 as well, with the Catamounts finishing fourth and the Wildcats placing 21st in the nation.
Vermont concluded last season with a 16-4-2 overall record and advanced to the NCAA Quarterfinals, for the first time since 1989, where the Catamounts came up short 2-1 to eventual national champion Syracuse. New Hampshire, went 15-4-1, won an NCAA First Round contest and then fell to FIU in 12 rounds of penalty kicks in the second round.
New Hampshire claimed the 2022 America East Championship, while Vermont took down the Wildcats for the crown in 2021.
The America East is one of the best men’s soccer conferences in the country. The conference has received multiple bids to the NCAA tournament in four of the past eight seasons, with Vermont and New Hampshire reaching each of the past two years. Overall, four different teams have reached the third round of the NCAA tournament since 2014, highlighted by UMBC getting all the way to the College Cup in 2014.
