BOSTON – One of the most acclaimed student-athletes in America East history, Courtney Coppersmith added to her accolades by earning 2022-23 America East Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year honors while Binghamton's Matt Cavaliere was named the Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. The pair, which were announced as the winners on Monday afternoon, were chosen from a group of 16 student-athletes who were named Scholar-Athletes in their respective sports this year.
 
2022-23 America East Scholar-Athletes of the Year
Female: Courtney Coppersmith, UMBC, Softball

• Graduated with a 3.71 GPA as a biochemistry and molecular biology major and pursuing M.S. in Chemistry.
• First-ever America East student-athlete to be named Scholar-Athlete of the Year three times.
• Four-time #AESB Pitcher of the Year and First-Team All-Conference selection.
• Four-time #AESB Scholar Athlete.
• Led UMBC to four straight #AESB Titles and finished career as #AESB’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 1,023 strikeouts.

 
Male: Matt Cavaliere, Binghamton,, Men’s Track & Field:

• The senior had a 3.87 GPA as a biological science and history double major.
• 2023 #AETF Champion in the 1,500 meters and the 2023 IC4A Champion in the 1,500 meters.
• 2023 America East All-Academic selection in both indoor and outdoor track & field.
• 2023 Indoor & Outdoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete.

Coppersmith and Cavaliere excelled as student-athletes this year, embodying the complete student-athlete. The Scholar-Athletes of the Year were voted on by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement Committee. Each year, the committee elects a Scholar-Athlete in each of the league's 18 championship sports following the fall, winter and spring seasons and from that group, chooses one male and one female as the conference's Scholar-Athletes of the Year.
