BOSTON – Six impressive student-athletes from six different America East schools who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically throughout their college careers have been named 2022-23 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes. The honorees were announced by the conference on Wednesday afternoon.
Four of the six honorees helped their team capture a conference championship, while the other two won individual conference titles in track & field.
2022-23 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes
Baseball: Connor Goodman, Maine
- The senior owned a 3.89 GPA as a management major.
- First-Team All-Conference selection after helping lead Maine to the Championship.
- Hit .311 with 65 hits, eight doubles and 47 RBI.
- Three-time All-Academic selection.
Men’s Lacrosse: Kevin Groeninger, Bryant
- The senior had a 3.74 GPA as a finance major.
- First-Team All-Conference performer.
- Named America East Tournament MOP after leading Bulldogs to the Title.
- Finished the season with 38 goals and 30 assists, including five goals in #AEMLAX Championship.
Women’s Lacrosse: Katie Pascale, UAlbany
- The junior has a 3.77 GPA as an accounting major.
- #AEWLAX Midfielder of the Year and Inside Lacrosse Honorable Mention All-America.
- Led UAlbany to #AEWLAX Title and NCAA First Round win over No. 12 Virginia.
- Finished the season with 92 points, 49 goals, 43 assists 139 draw controls and 28 ground balls.
Softball: Courtney Coppersmith, UMBC
- Graduated with a 3.71 GPA as a biochemistry and molecular biology major and pursuing M.S. in Chemistry.
- Four-time #AESB Pitcher of the Year and First-Team All-Conference selection.
- Four-time #AESB Scholar Athlete.
- Led UMBC to four straight #AESB Titles and finished career as #AESB’s all-time leader in strikeouts with 1,023 strikeouts.
Men’s Outdoor Track & Field: Matt Cavaliere, Binghamton
- The senior had a 3.87 GPA as a biological science and history double major.
- 2023 #AETF Champion in the 1,500 meters and the 2023 IC4A Champion in the 1,500 meters.
- 2023 America East All-Academic selection in both indoor and outdoor track & field.
- 2023 Indoor Track & Field Scholar Athlete.
Women’s Outdoor Track & Field: Izzy Giesing, UMass Lowell
- The graduate student had a 3.75 GPA as an environmental science major.
- Holds a 3.88 graduate GPA in engineering management.
- 2023 #AETF Champion in the 1,500 meters and place third in 4x800 relay.
- Qualified for NCAA Regionals in the 800 meters.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
