BOSTON – Following a number of impressive performances from a variety of athletic programs, Binghamton University has claimed the 2022-23 Stuart P. Haskell Commissioner's Cup for the first time, as announced by the league on Wednesday evening.
The Bearcats secured the first Commissioner’s Cup in program history thanks in part to seven runner-up finishes during the season and a pair of regular season championships. Binghamton finished with 367 total points to edge UAlbany by 32 points, who had 335. UMBC placed third with 292 points while Vermont was fourth with 280 points and UMass Lowell had 275 points to take fifth.
The Commissioner's Cup annually recognizes the strongest athletic program in America East as determined by a scoring system which rewards a school for success both during the regular season and championship competition across all conference-sponsored sports. A few departments stepped up their game this past year:
- Binghamton earned its first Commissioner’s Cup and after finishing sixth a year ago.
- The Bearcats previous best finish was second back in 2005-06 and its best previous point total was 357 in 2004-05.
- Binghamton and UAlbany each had seven runner-up finishes, accounting for 78% of all runner-up finishes during the year.
- UAlbany has now finished in the top two for 12 consecutive years and had ten programs win a championship or secure a runner-up finish.
- UMBC secured its third straight third place finish, once again matching its best finish in school history.
- UMass Lowell led the way by winning a program-best five championships over the last year.
- Four programs secured their first conference title, including Bryant men’s lacrosse earning the school its first conference title in its initial year in the league.
- Four difference schools claimed at least three conference titles: UAlbany, UMBC, UMass Lowell and New Hampshire.
Several programs extended long championship streaks:
- UAlbany women’s outdoor track & field won its 14th straight title.
- UMBC softball claimed its 4th straight championship.
- New Hampshire women’s swimming earned its fourth consecutive championship.
- UMass Lowell men’s and women’s cross country completed a championship sweep for the third consecutive year.
Binghamton’s Cup was due in part to its success in a number of sports:
- The Bearcats won regular season titles in women’s soccer and volleyball and earned second-place regular season finishes in three other sports.
- Totaled seven runner-up finishes
- Reached AE semifinals in 7 of 9 team sports they sponsor.
