Binghamton, N.Y. - The Maine Black Bears came out on top in a 6-1 win over Binghamton to claim their 5th #AEBASE championship.
This is the Black Bears first #AEBASE Championship since 2011. The Black Bears have earned the America East’s automatic bid to the 2023 NCAA Baseball Championship and will learn its draw during the NCAA Selection Show, which will be announced on ESPN2 at noon ET on Monday, May 29. Maine’s freshman Gianni Gambardella was honored Most Outstanding Player and a member of the All Championship Team after his work on the mound. He pitched 8.0 innings allowing no earned runs and striking out two in the game.
The Black Bears wasted no time scoring in the bottom of the first, starting it off with Jake Rainess hitting a solo home run to put Maine on the board. From then on the Black Bear scored in the 2nd, 3rd and 4th. An RBI from Ryan Turenne put Maine up 2-0 in the bottom of the 2nd. Jeremiah Jenkins was quick to follow with a home run of his own making it 3-0 after 3 innings. Following Jenkins, Jake Marquez hit his first homer of the season and brought in Turenne, adding to Maine’s lead 5-0 in the 4th. THe Black Bears scoring came to a close at the end of the 7th with a homer to left field by QUinn McDaniel capping out their 7 run runs.
Maine’s stellar defense was able to hold Binghamton to just one run and included two double plays and 8 shutout innings. Binghamton’s one run came at the top of the 9th with a solo home run by Kevin Gsell to put the Bearcats on the board.
Joining Gambardella on the All-Championship Team are teammates Nick White, Jeremiah Jenkins, and Caleb Leys. From Binghamton Evin Sullivan, Thomas Babalis and Kevin Gsell were honored with All-Championship Team accolades.
The 2023 Elite 18 Award winner Connor Goodman of Maine. A senior Management major with a 3.89 GPA.
