Six Impressive Student-Athletes Named Winter Scholar-Athletes

BOSTON – Six standout student-athletes from six different America East schools who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically throughout their collegiate careers have been named 2022-23 America East Winter Scholar-Athletes. The honorees were announced by the conference office on Friday afternoon.

Matt Veretto, Vermont, Gr. – Men’s Basketball
  • Earned undergraduate degree with a 3.98 GPA in finance.
  • Holds a 3.56 graduate GPA in accounting.
  • 2022-23 America East All-Academic selection.
  • Named to the 2023 America East All-Championship team after helping Vermont win the men’s basketball championship.
 
Helene Haegerstrand, UAlbany, Sr. – Women’s Basketball
  • Carries a 3.60 GPA majoring in business administration.
  • 2022-23 America East All-Academic selection.
  • Two-time First-Team All-America East selection.
 
Oliver Gassmann, UMBC, So. – Men’s Swimming & Diving
  • Has a 3.86 GPA in business technology administration.
  • 2023 America East All-Academic choice and CoSIDA All-District honoree.
  • Named Most Outstanding Male Swimmer at 2023 America East Swimming & Diving Championship after winning six gold medals, three individual and three as part of a relay team.
 
Madison Linstedt, New Hampshire, Sr. – Women’s Swimming & Diving
  • Carries a 3.60 GPA majoring in environmental conservation and sustainability.
  • 2023 America East All-Academic choice and CoSIDA All-District honoree.
  • Earned three bronze medals at the 2023 America East Swimming & Diving Championship.
 
Matt Cavaliere, Binghamton, Sr. – Men’s Indoor Track & Field
  • Earning a 3.87 GPA in double major in biological sciences and history.
  • 2023 America East All-Academic selection.
  • Won the mile at the 2023 America East Indoor Track & Field Championship.
 
Izzy Giesing, UMass Lowell, Gr. – Women’s Indoor Track & Field
  • Earned undergraduate degree with a 3.75 GPA in environmental science.
  • Holds a 3.88 graduate GPA in engineering management.
  • Four-time America East All-Academic honoree.
  • Earned second-team All-America honors in the 800 meters.
  • Won the 800 meters and was on two winning relay teams at the America East Championship to help the River Hawks win their first team title.
 
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in the winter season including men’s and women’s basketball, men’s and women’s swimming & diving and men’s and women’s indoor track & field. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. Each America East Scholar-Athlete was a projected starter or prominent reserve and carries a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.50.

Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
