BOSTON – Thursday is Major League Baseball’s Opening Day and two former America East student-athletes were named to opening day rosters, along with many more in the minor leagues.
Former Maine Black Bear Jeremy Peña burst onto the scene in 2022, taking over the starting shortstop job for the Houston Astros and batting .253 with 22 home runs during the regular season. He brought it to another level in the playoffs, taking home ALCS MVP honors and then securing the title of World Series MVP after batting .400 with 10 hits and five runs while leading the Astros to the World Series.
Adam Ottavino returns to the Mets this season, where as a reliever in 2022 he went 6-3 with a 2.06 ERA and 76 K in 65.2 IP. This year marks his 13th season in Major League Baseball as a reliever. Ottavino played at Northeastern, where he earned America East Pitcher of the Year honors in 2005 and helped the team capture the 2005 Regular Season Championship.
