BOSTON – The leaderboard was tight down to the wire, but UMass Lowell was able to pull away and earn its first-ever #AETF Indoor Championship sweep as the men won their second straight title and the women held on to defeat UAlbany in the closest women’s finish in conference history on Sunday evening.
The River Hawks led the Great Danes going into the 4x400 relay, and were able to hold onto the lead after the final race. Both teams were in the first section of the event and UAlbany ran a blistering 3:45.84 to beat UMass Lowell by 8.59 seconds. In the second section, Binghamton earned the victory in 3:48.61, followed by Bryant and UMBC. Bryant took third overall in 3:50.26 and UMass Lowell’s time of 3:54.83 was just ahead of UMBC (3:55.03) to provide a 196.5-196 final margin of victory over UAlbany.
The victory ended UAlbany’s run of nine consecutive titles, and they became the first team other than the Great Danes to since Boston University in 2012.
Travis Williams of UAlbany had record-breaking performances in the 60m and the 200m on Sunday. Williams was named Most Outstanding Track Performer after winning titles in both events with times of 6.64 in the 60m and 20.89 in the 200m.
Emily Sessa earned Most Outstanding Track Performer for the women as she won the 1000m, the 1-mile race and then took home gold in the DMR and the 4x800 relay.
Evan Thornton-Sherman of Maine took home Most Outstanding Rookie honors after claiming a dramatic victory in the 5000 meters and taking fifth in the mile. On the women’s side, UAlbany’s Jazmen Newbury was honored for being part of the winning 4x400 relay and taking second in the 200m with her time of 23.85.
Binghamton’s Brandon Love was awarded Most Outstanding Field Performer honors for his victory in the pole vault with a height of 4.75 meters and UVM’s Lauren Triarsi secured honors on the female side after winning the pentathlon.
UMass Lowell’s Kenzie Doyle received the Coaches’ Award for totaling the most points of any female competitor over the two-day championship. On the men’s side Travis Williams and NJIT’s Jacob Leigh won the Coaches’ Award.
UMass Lowell took home Coaching Staff of the Year honors for both the men and the women.
Senior Charlotte Crum from Vermont was awarded the Women's Elite 18 Award. Crum is a psychological science major who holds a 3.99 GPA. Teammate Andrew Crompton was awarded the Men's Elite 18 Award. He is a microbiology major with a 3.99 GPA.
