Women's Basketball 2/13/2023 12:00:00 PM Women’s #AEHoops Week 14: UVM, UAlbany and UMBC Earn Sweeps BOSTON – Vermont stretched its win streak to ten, its longest in over 20 years, with a pair of victories, while UAlbany and UMBC both won twice to keep pace with the Catamounts this week. The Week That Was The Catamounts took down Maine 68-60 on Wednesday and followed it up with a 58-39 win over UMass Lowell to improve to 10-2 in conference play. UAlbany needed overtime, but outlasted Binghamton on Saturday 63-53. The Great Danes also beat Bryant 56-36 on Wednesday. The Retrievers moved into third place in the standings with a pair of victories last week, edging NJIT 72-69 and then holding off Bryant on the road 75-69. Looking Ahead Women’s #AEHoops action on Wednesday features a battle of top three teams as UAlbany plays at UMBC, while NJIT looks to make it three straight wins when they host Binghamton. On Saturday, Vermont hosts NJIT, while Maine travels to UAlbany. A reminder that every round of the Jersey Mikes #AEPlayoffs will take place on the higher seed’s home court so earning home court advantage will prove crucial once again. The league champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship. The majority games will air on The AE on ESPN, either ESPN+ or ESPN3, in the United States. Games will also be available internationally on AmericaEast.TV. Those games will be available on computers, OTT devices and the brand new America East app, which is available on all IOS and Android devices and can be found by searching ‘America East Conference’ in app stores. The women’s #AEHoops preseason poll was announced on Oct. 19. 2022-23 Weekly Award Winners (Feb. 13) Player of the Week Kayla Cooper, UAlbany – Jr., Guard, Frederick, Md. Averaged 19.0 points, 10.5 rebounds and 1.5 assists per game in a pair of wins last week. Shot 8-for-10, finishing with 21 points and 12 rebounds against Bryant. Posted 17 points, nine rebounds and two assists while making a key free throw to force overtime with less than one second remaining in regulation as UAlbany eventually won. This is Cooper’s second Women’s #AEHoops Player of the Week honor this year. Rookie of the Week Alejandra Zuniga, NJIT – Fr., Guard, Madrid, Spain Averaged 14.5 points, 3.5 assists, 2.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals per game in a 1-1 week. Scored 13 points with four steals and three assists in a loss to UMBC. Finished the week with 16 points, four assists and three rebounds in a road win over Maine. This is Zuniga’s third #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
