Women’s #AEHoops Week 7: Six Teams Earn Victories

BOSTON – Six different teams earned wins before the Holiday break, led by impressive performances by Vermont, UAlbany & Maine, as well as a last-second victory by UMBC.
  
The Week That Was
  • Four teams won road games last Wednesday, marking the second time that has occurred this year. Vermont also won at home to make it five wins in seven games for the conference on Wednesday.
  • UMBC came away with the most dramatic win of the week, as Trinity Palacio hit a driving layup with just one second left to lift the Retrievers to a 60-59 win.
  • Vermont edged Sacred Heart behind 22 points and nine assists from Emma Utterback while Ella Wanzer hit six triples and had 20 points in a 22-point win for Binghamton over Army.
  • UAlbany improved to 10-2 with a 22-point win over UMass and UNH took down Wagner by 21 thanks to 20 points and five assists from Breezie Williams.
  • Maine beat Duquesne 80-72 and then fell to Tulane 64-61 down is Louisiana. In the win, Adrianna Smith posted 15 rebounds, ten assists and eight points, while Anne Simon averaged 18.5 points per game in the two contests.

Looking Ahead
  • Conference play is right around the corner and eight teams play one final tune-up contest before #AEHoops action begins on Thursday, Jan. 4.
  • UAlbany leads the conference with a NET rating of 127, following closely by Maine (133) and Vermont (161).
  • The Catamounts face a tough test at home against defending Ivy League Champion Princeton on Friday, while Maine travels to play at UPenn on Saturday.
  • UAlbany seeks to extend its home win streak to 16 games against Navy on Saturday, while UMass Lowell and UMBC are both home on Friday.
  • NJIT plays the lone New Year’s Eve contest, welcoming LIU for a 1 p.m. matchup.

Fans will once again be able to watch every #AEHoops game this season regardless of where they live!. The majority games will air on The AE on ESPN, either ESPN+ or ESPN3, in the United States. Games will also be available internationally on AmericaEast.TV. Those games will be available on computers, OTT devices and the brand new America East app, which is available on all IOS and Android devices and can be found by searching ‘America East Conference’ in app stores.

The women’s #AEHoops preseason poll was announced on Oct. 19.
 
2023-24 Weekly Award Winners (Dec. 26)
Player of the Week
Emma Utterback, Vermont – Gr., Guard, Greenwood, Ind.
  • Totaled 22 points and nine assists in a win over NEC preseason favorite Sacred Heart.
  • Played 37 total minutes, shooting 63 percent from the floor while also adding three rebounds as UVM extended its home win streak to 16 games.
  • This is Utterback’s sixth career #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Nia Scott, Bryant – Fr., Forward, Medford Lakes, N.J
  • Had a career-high 14 points and 12 rebounds against Boston College.
  • Shot 7-for-9 from the floor and grabbed five offensive rebounds versus the Eagles.
  • This is Scott’s first #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
