Men's #AEHoops Week 1: Vermont, UMass Lowell off to Strong Starts

BOSTON – Seven different teams earned at least one victory during the opening week, with Vermont and UMass Lowell, the two teams the vied for the America East championship last season, each going 2-0.

The Week That Was
  • Ayinde Hikim scored a career-high 25 points to lead UMass Lowell over Dartmouth on Friday.
  • Vermont newcomer Shamir Bogues scored 19 points in his Catamount debut to lead his squad over reigning NEC champion Merrimack on Monday.
  • Sebastian Thomas scored a game-high 24 points and added seven rebounds and five assists to lead UAlbany to its first win of the season Saturday, a 78-75 victory at Columbia.
     
Looking Ahead
  • A busy week lies ahead with 20 men’s #AEHoops game on the slate.
  • Vermont plays in the Myrtle Beach Invitational and opens by facing reigning CAA champion and preseason favorite Charleston in the opener on Thursday at 11:30 a.m. in a game that will be televised on ESPNU.
  • UMass Lowell faces a tough test this week traveling to take on Georgia Tech Tuesday and then heading across the country to battle Arizona St. on Thursday.

Fans will once again be able to watch every #AEHoops game this season regardless of where they live! The majority games will air on The AE on ESPN, either ESPN+ or ESPN3, in the United States. Games will also be available internationally on AmericaEast.TV. Those games will be available on computers, OTT devices and the brand new America East app, which is available on all IOS and Android devices and can be found by searching ‘America East Conference’ in app stores.

The men’s #AEHoops preseason poll was announced on Oct. 18.
 
2023-24 Weekly Award Winners (Nov. 13)
Player of the Week
Dion Brown, UMBC – So., Guard, Great Barrington, Mass.                                  
  • Averaged a league-best 25.5 points and added 5.5 rebounds and 2.0 steals in two games last week.
  • Shot 53 percent (20-of-38) from the field.
  • Nearly led UMBC to an upset win at Louisville by scoring a career-high 28 points.
  • This is Brown’s first career men’s #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Evan Ashe, Binghamton – Fr., Guard, Charlotte, N.C.
  • Averaged 17.0 points and 1.5 rebounds in a 1-1 week.
  • Shot 68 percent (13-of-19) from the floor.
  • This is Ashe’s first career men’s #AEHoops Rookie of the Week honor.
