2023-24 #AEHoops Preview: Binghamton Men’s Basketball

Nine Teams, Nine Days – Over the next nine days we’ll take a look at each of the America East’s nine men’s basketball programs in a lead up to the 2023-24 season. The regular season begins on Monday, Nov. 6 with eight teams in action and the full schedule of contests can be found here.

Third-year head coach Levell Sanders is excited about what his team could do this season after last year’s success. In 2022-23 they earned the No. 5 seed in the conference tournament and posted Binghamton’s best conference winning percentage in 13 years. The team was also on the cusp of hosting a conference playoff contest but came up just short. The Bearcats did advance to the #AEHoops Semifinals for the second straight year and Sanders knows his team is looking for more this season.

“The guys we do have look hungry,” said Sanders. “I think they feel we have a talented team so they’re working hard. I think they’re anxious to play against another opponent. We’re beating ourselves up a lot, but I think the team is hungry and the guys are focused.”

Upperclassmen Dan Petcash and Armon Harried may be the team’s only returning starters but Sanders is confident there will be plenty of talent on the roster to produce. Last year Harried finished second on the team in scoring at 11.8 points and 6.3 rebounds per game, while Petcash put 9.8 points per game while shooting a team-best 40.6 percent from downtown with a team-high 43 triples. In addition to that duo, Tariq Balogun made ten starts and appeared in 24 games, averaging 6.6 points and 2.8 rebounds per game.

Sanders brough in nine newcomers overall, with a mix of transfers and freshmen. Chief among the transfers is Symir Torrence who appeared in 31 games for Syracuse last year and averaged 2.4 points, 1.5 rebounds and 1.6 assists per game. Transfer Tymu Chenery comes from Quinnipiac, where he played in 85 contests over three years and averaged 7.6 points per game.

The Bearcats open up their season on the road at Northwestern on Nov. 6 and then battle Pittsburgh on the road five days later. Binghamton returns home on Nov. 12 and stays in the Northeast for the remainder of the month. In December they face Colgate on the road and host Niagara before finishing non-conference play at home against Marywood. Binghamton begins conference play on Jan. 11 at Bryant.
