UMass Lowell and Vermont are advancing in the 2023 America East Women’s Soccer Championship. The two teams each posted quarterfinal wins on Monday to advance to the semifinals.
The #4 River Hawks scored the game’s first three goals to beat #5 NJIT, 3-1, in one quarterfinal while Vermont jumped out to a two-goal lead in the second half to down #3 New Hampshire, 3-1, in the other.
Vermont will visit #2 Maine in the semifinals while the UMass Lowell heads to Vestal, N.Y. to take on regular-season champion and top-seeded Binghamton in the other semi. Both games kick off shortly after 6 p.m. will air on ESPN+.
Quarterfinals Recap
#6 Vermont 2, #3 New Hampshire 1
- Vermont scored twice in the second half and held off a late charge from New Hampshire on its way to a 2-1 victory in the #AEWSOC quarterfinals.
- The Catamounts are in the semifinals for the second time in the last three seasons.
- Vermont is the third sixth seed to win a quarterfinal game since 2017.
- After a scoreless first half, Jill Brody started the scoring for UVM in the 55th minute. She took the ball up the right side and blasted home a shot from 30 yards out into the lower left-hand corner.
- Lauren DeGroot made it 2-0 in the 75th minute, converting a cross from Tessa Weiss.
- UNH made it interesting by cutting the deficit to 2-1 on Megan Logue’s score in the 89th minute but it was too little, too late.
- Both goalkeepers played well as UNH’s Sally Rainey had eight saves and Vermont’s Erin Murphy made six.
#4 UMass Lowell 3, #5 NJIT 1
- UMass Lowell scored the first three goals of the game en route to the 3-1 win over NJIT in the #AEWSOC quarterfinals.
- The River Hawks have now reached the semifinals in three of the last four seasons. However the win was it’s first tournament victory since 2018.
- Chloe Layne got the scoring started in the 15th minute as she tipped in a Calliste Brookshire's free kick to put UMass Lowell up 1-0.
- Brookshire set up the second score as well just over 10 minutes later as Julia Edholm put the home team up 2-0.
- Edholm added extra insurance by netting her second of the contest in the 71st minute.
- NJIT got on the board in the ‘77th on Bailey Chant’s third goal of the year.
- The River Hawks outshot the Highlanders, 23-10.
- NJIT goalkeeper Samantha Constantine made 11 saves while Taylor Burgess had five for UML.
