Men's #AEHoops Preview: Bryant at Vermont on ESPNU Headlines Jan. 5 Action

BOSTON – The 2022-23 America East men’s basketball conference schedule gets underway on Saturday, Dec. 31 at with three games and one more on Jan. 1.
 
UMass Lowell enters league play on the heels of its best non-conference slate in program history. The River Hawks racked up a program-record 12 wins and enter conference play at 12-2. Bryant (9-4) and UMBC (9-5) also enter the league slate with winning records.

Thursday, January 5
Maine (6-7) at UMass Lowell (13-2) - 6 PM (ESPN+)
  • UMass Lowell overcame a 10-point deficit in its league opener by scoring the last 13 points in its win at NJIT on Saturday.
  • The River Hawks have highest NET among conference teams (85).
  • Maine’s six non-league wins are its most since the 2013-14 season.
  • The Black Bears rank near the top of the America East in some major categories entering conference play. They rank first in steals per game (9.7), second in field goal% (46.9) and second in turnover margin (1.5).
Bryant (10-4, 1-0 AE) at Vermont (7-8, 1-0 AE) - 7 PM (ESPNU)
  • The highly touted matchup pairs reigning league champions against each other. Bryant won the NEC last year before joining America East while Vermont captured it’s third men’s basketball title in four years.
  • Both teams won their league openers over the weekend. Bryant held off Binghamton, 82-78, on Saturday while Vermont won at UMBC, 74-61, on Sunday.
  • With his next win, Vermont head coach John Becker will pass Tom Brennan to become the all-time winningest coach in program history.
  • The Bulldogs’ Sherif Gross-Bullock is the league’s leading scorer averaging 17.1 points per game.
New Hampshire (6-7, 1-0 AE) at Binghamton (4-10, AE) – 7 PM (ESPN+)
  • UNH, winners of three of its last four games, beat UAlbany in its league opener by holding the Great Danes to just 51 points and 35 percent shooting.
  • The Wildcats’ Clarence Daniels is averaging a double-double of 16.1 points and 11.3 rebounds per game.
  • Binghamton looks to rebound after dropping its league opener at Bryant.
  • Jacob Falko leads the Bearcats averaging 12.3 points per game.
UAlbany (5-11, 0-1 AE) at UMBC (9-6, AE) – 7 PM (ESPN+)
  • Both team’s dropped their league openers last weekend and are looking for their first wins.
  • UMBC had run off six-straight wins before its current two-game skid and has win four of the last five in the series.
  • UAlbany’s Jonathan Beagle is the league’s top rookie scorer averaging 10.8 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
