Women’s #AEHoops Week 11: Catamounts & Retrievers Go 2-0

BOSTON – Vermont stretched its win streak to five games with a pair of impressive victories and UMBC also went 2-0 this week. Both programs sit at 5-2 in conference play, while UAlbany won its lone game to stay perfect at 7-0 in conference play.
 
The Week That Was
  • Vermont opened its week with 61-52 victory over Maine, outscoring the Black Bears by 14 in the second half. The Catamounts then took down NJIT 65-32 for the largest margin of victory in #AEHoops action this year, their fifth consecutive victory.
  •  UMBC beat UMass Lowell 76-59 to start the week and then outlasted New Hampshire 62-57 in overtime to improve to 5-2 in #AEHoops action.
  • UMass Lowell earned its first #AEHoops win of the year, taking down Bryant with four players scoring in double figures.
 
Looking Ahead
  • Women’s #AEHoops action on Wednesday features NJIT at UMBC, as the Highlanders look to snap the Retrievers’ two-game win streak.
  • UAlbany and Maine face off on Saturday with first place in the conference possibly on the line in Orono. The Great Danes (7-0) currently are atop the standings, with the Black Bears (5-1) right behind them.
  • Vermont hosts Binghamton on Wednesday and then travels to UMBC on Saturday as the team seeks to extend its winning streak.
 
A reminder that every round of the Jersey Mikes #AEPlayoffs will take place on the higher seed’s home court so earning home court advantage will prove crucial once again. The league champion will earn an automatic berth into the NCAA Women's Basketball Championship.

Fans will once again be able to watch every #AEHoops game this season regardless of where they live!. The majority games will air on The AE on ESPN, either ESPN+ or ESPN3, in the United States. Games will also be available internationally on AmericaEast.TV. Those games will be available on computers, OTT devices and the brand new America East app, which is available on all IOS and Android devices and can be found by searching ‘America East Conference’ in app stores.

The women’s #AEHoops preseason poll was announced on Oct. 19.
 
2022-23 Weekly Award Winners (Jan. 23)
Player of the Week
Kayla Cooper, UAlbany – Jr., Guard, Frederick, Md.              
  • Posted 18 points, 13 rebounds and two assists in 29 minutes against Binghamton
  • Helped UAlbany improve to 7-0 in #AEHoops play and shot 9-for-14 from the floor.
  • This is Cooper’s second career Women’s #AEHoops Player of the Week honor.
 
Rookie of the Week
Jadyn Weltz, Binghamton – Fr., Guard, Ontario, Canada
  • Averaged 8.0 points, 6.5 rebounds, 4.0 assists and 4.0 steals against UAlbany and Maine.
  • Finished with six points, six steals, five assists and three rebounds in a four-point loss to the Great Danes.
  • Contributed ten points, ten rebounds, three assists and two steals against Maine.
  • This is Weltz’s second Women’s #AEHoops Rookie of the Week award this season.
