BOSTON – It’s a busy Labor Day weekend as over 50 America East contests will take place, along with the first cross country meets of the season. Check out our weekend preview for some of the games to watch from each of our sports. Links to watch all the action and follow scores can be found on our calendar.
Field Hockey
New Hampshire has started the year a perfect 2-0 and the Wildcats try to keep their strong start going when they square off against Providence on Friday at 4 p.m., and then No. 25 on UMass on Sunday at 12 p.m. A pair of victories could be enough to get them in the next national rankings.
Stanford is 1-1 this year after dropping a tight 1-0 decision against No. 4 Maryland on Monday. Freshman goalkeeper Daisy Ford was outstanding with 11 saves. She’ll be tested again this weekend as the Cardinal square off against Michigan State and Indiana. UAlbany also has a tough task as they host No. 11 Penn State on Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
Men’s Soccer
Through one week, UMBC and NJIT are the lone unbeaten teams remaining in the America East, and the Retrievers are currently receiving votes in the latest USC National Poll. They have a chance to extend their impressive start, hosting St. Francis Brooklyn and Fairleigh Dickinson on Friday and Sunday, with each contest at 7 p.m. The Highlanders, meanwhile, travel to UConn on Friday at 7 p.m. in their lone contest of the weekend.
Vermont is also receiving votes nationally and has the toughest schedule this weekend as the Catamounts host No. 15 Syracuse on Friday night at 7 p.m. and then travel to face Ivy League favorite Princeton on Sunday at 4 p.m. Preseason favorite UNH has started the season 0-2, but it looks to rebound against VCU on Saturday evening at 6:00 p.m.
Women’s Soccer
Maine is off to its best start since 2015 with a 3-0-1 mark and looks to keep it rolling when the Black Bears travel to Quinnipiac at 12 p.m. on Saturday. UMBC, meanwhile, is 2-1-1 and hosts Delaware State on Thursday night at 6 p.m. before taking on Lafayette at 12 p.m. on Sunday afternoon.
America East preseason favorite UMass Lowell has dropped three straight after an opening day victory, but the River Hawks look to rebound as they host Stonehill on Thursday at 7 p.m. and then travel to face UMass on Sunday at 3 p.m.
Volleyball
New Hampshire is the lone undefeated team remaining in the conference after going 4-0 and losing just one set in its home-opening tournament. The Wildcats face a tougher slate this weekend as they travel down to Pennsylvania for matches against Fairfield, Lafayette, and Villanova. America East newcomer Bryant had a solid 2-2 start to the year and leads the conference with 12.4 kills per set. The Bulldogs host Harvard, Montana State and Boston College this Friday and Saturday.
Two-time reigning America East Champion UMBC is just 1-2 but has faced the toughest schedule thus far. The team earned a 3-1 victory over Villanova to start the year but fell 3-0 to No. 24 USC and then lost 3-0 to Colgate. The Retrievers travel to American on Friday and then host Delaware on Monday as they look to piece together a win streak.
Cross Country
Six teams are in action during opening weekend. Defending champion UMass Lowell is headed up to face Vermont on Saturday while Binghamton travels to compete in the Harry Lang Invitational at Colgate. UMBC will take part in the Mount 5k Duals while NJIT and Maine are also in action.
