BOSTON – Following the MLB Draft earlier this month, three America East student-athletes signed free agent contracts with MLB Teams. UAlbany’s Brad Malm was signed by the Mets, while Bryant’s Collin Lowe and Maine’s Matt Pushard both signed with the Miami Marlins.
Malm spent five years with the Great Danes Program. This year he led the America East during the regular season in home runs (15), total bases (131) and slugging percentage (.655), as well as finishing in the top five in OPS (1.058), at-bats (200), runs (53), hits (68), and RBIs (49). He started all 47 games for UAlbany at shortstop, batting .340 at the plate, and was named America East Second Team All-Conference.
Lowe spent a single season with Bryant, following a four-years at Richmond. The right-hander earned All-Northeast Conference First Team, All-New England, and All-ECAC honors. He finished 5-4 with a 2.79 ERA in 80.2 innings. He struck out 79 and allowed just 16 walks for the Bulldogs. Lowe allowed two runs or less in eight of his 14 starts.
Pushard wrapped up his career with the Black Bears in 2022. He posted a conference-best nine saves over 30 innings of work. He also posted 44 strikeouts to 18 walks with a 6.00 ERA to earn Second-Team All-Conference honors this year.
Three America East alums are currently on major league rosters, led by Houston Astros rookie standout Jeremy Pena, who is currently in the running for AL Rookie of the Year. Hartford’s David MacKinnon made his MLB debut earlier this year for the Angels, while Stony Brook’s Travis Jankowski currently plays for the Mets.
