BOSTON – Six standout student-athletes who have displayed excellence both academically and athletically throughout their college careers have been named 2021-22 America East Spring Scholar-Athletes. The honorees were announced by the conference on Thursday afternoon.
Each of the six spring honorees were first-team all-conference selections or won an America East individual title. Four were selected as All-Americans and three earned major conference awards in their respective sports.
Evan Giordano, Stony Brook – Baseball
- Had a 3.84 GPA as a Business Management major
- Selected as America East Player of the Year
- Named First-Team All-Conference
- Led the America East in slugging percentage (.651) and OPS (1.103) while batting .337
Thomas McConvey, Vermont – Men’s Lacrosse
- Had a 3.66 GPA as a Business Administration major
- Named All-American by Inside Lacrosse, USILA and US Lacrosse
- America East Offensive Player of the Year
- Led the America East in points (74) and goals (60)
Kate Pascale, UAlbany – Women’s Lacrosse
- Owns a 3.78 GPA as an Accounting major
- Named Inside Lacrosse All-America Honorable Mention
- First-Team All-Region and First-Team All-Conference
- Led America East in assists (39) and was second in points (82)
Courtney Coppersmith, UMBC – Softball
- Graduated with a 3.71 GPA as a double major in Biochemistry & Molecular Biology
- America East Pitcher of the Year for the 3rd straight year
- Second Team All-Region and ranked third nationally in ERA (0.78)
- 2021-22 America East Woman of the Year
Dan Schaffer, Binghamton – Men’s Outdoor Track & Field
- Graduated with a 3.78 GPA as an Electrical Engineering major and earned MS in Electrical and Computer Engineering with a 3.89 GPA
- Secured Honorable Mention All-America Honors by placing 24th at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the 5,000 meters
- Won America East Titles in the 1,500 meters and 4x800 relay at the America East Outdoor Championships
- CoSIDA Second-Team Academic All-American
Emily Mackay, Binghamton – Women’s Outdoor Track & Field
- Graduated with a 3.56 as a Psychology major and had a 3.84 GPA earning her MBA
- Named First-Team All-American after placing sixth in the 1,500 meters at the 2022 NCAA Outdoor Track & Field Championships
- Broke America East Outdoor Championship record in the 800 meters (2:06.46)
- CoSIDA Third-Team Academic All-American
The Scholar-Athletes were members of teams in the six championship sports which America East sponsored in during the spring season. Nominees were put forward by their institution, which could nominate up to one student-athlete per sport, then were voted upon by the conference's Student-Athlete Engagement committee. All nominees are required to have a 3.50 GPA or higher.
Sport Scholar-Athletes are automatically eligible for the America East Female or Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year awards, which will be announced in July.
